Hello friends:

I have an inboard jet drive 17-foot boat. The engine is completely open to be worked on. I need a new engine and want to use a Chevy 502HO all iron crate motor parts # 12568778. The motor comes with the heads already installed and I would like to know if Chevy?s stock head gasket would be ok in a marine application? I know I will need to replace the expansion plugs to brass ones and that I will need a marine carburetor and fuel pump.
If anyone out there can tell me if the head gasket will withstand salt water I would be ever so thank full. If you know of other problems that I will run into please help.

Thank yo?al

Ayuh,....

You'll have to get the Build Sheet,+ see just which headgaskets were used,...

I can't imagine it would matter, unless a marine gasket is brass or stainless steel shim? Plenty of guys have used automotive engines and just swaped for brass core plugs and swaped all the marine accesories to it, i don't know for sure though.

Why would you spend all that dough on a 502 crate motor then skimp on something like gaskets? Get the right ones!

Fel-Pro makes a composite head gasket that is perfect! I'm guessing that the factory head gasket is going to contain steel, and that's BAD for marine engines. Get composite head gaskets in there, along with those brass freeze plugs, and you'll be right as rain (assuming the cam is a marine or truck cam).
