Re: selectric to toggle conversion video.

I guess it's whatever floats your boat. I can see some sense to it if it were dash-mounted. Push the knob forward, the boat goes forward. Pull it back a bit, you got neutral. Pull it all the way back and the boat backs up. How do you spell "intituitive" ?

EDIT: Is it spelled b-l-o-n-d-e ? Ask your wife what she thinks.

blond or blonde in the dictionary. That question would be too complicated for my wife to answer:D

I would reverse the throw of the reverse switch on the right so that neutral is forward and reverse is backwards. As if you accidently hit the left switch forward you could easily hit both of them forward and have the same problem of the engine slamming into reverse. This way for reverse the left switch must be forward and the right switch must be backwards which should never happen accidently.

I'm going to put a switch cover over the reverse toggle. Can't find them in North Dakota, have to order them. guess you can switch however you want. Your idea makes sense. easier for me to remember forward on, back off.

Safety first. It might confuse your wife though... Or save her from slamming it into reverse!

used my boat tonight pulling the boys skiing. The extra toggle switch saved me several times. I would NOT run this with just one toggle switch unless all I did was fish.

Re: selectric to toggle conversion video.

This is an older posting but I'm probably going to end up doing the same thing on my '70 Evinrude Explorer OMC but I found the flip switch set up a tad confusing. The fear of throwing a switch in error is real and expensive:eek:. I'm thinking of using the same low profile McGill switches similar to the ones on my dash switch plate as shown in the attached pic.

This switch type is on-off-on. Technically only one on-off-on switch is necessary but two on-off-on switches either side-by-side or in-line would solve the fear factor. The first switch would permit the power connection only to the equivilent second switch gear selection; reverse or forward. Both switches would have to be in the same position for power to be applied to the applicable gear selection.

If either switch inadvertantly gets pressed (as opposed to flipped), no harm is done because power can not be applied to the other switch setting as it takes both switches to be in the same position simultaneously for the gear to be engaged. It's more difficult to inadvertantly press a switch than it is to flip one and these particular switches require firm pressure to flip it.

Thoughts on this?

Thanks.

This all looks a bit too Rube Goldstein...

I have a toggle switch in a critical electrical application, accidental activation is prevented by using a safety toggle.

It cannot be flipped unless the toggle is lifted upward to unlock it.
That will solve your problem, uses one less switch, cannot be accidentally switched even if you hit it with a hammer.

Mine is a 3 position toggle, sounds ideal.
