Hi Duckee,
I've been away from the forum for a couple of weeks trying to get my project done and balance the Honey Do list. Looks like you got your work cut out as well. John has been a great help in my project. V156 Glastron. I just finished putting down 3 of the 5 stringers. Glass over them and tie them into the transom. I covered them in Resin before putting in place with resin. I see alot of guys use PL to glue them down with. I was lucky with the stringer height as I was able to get them out in one piece or enogh of it to tracea template. I need to order up some foam tomorrow.
The grinding has been a job. Hope to have the floor in within the next to weeks. I haven't spent much money on this project, the biggest consumer is the time. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Get your wood one of the frist things , you have to get it drying !

all the wood reguardless of where it comes from...(excluding marine ply from a real lumber yards....sold to you at whatever % of dryness)

needs to be dryed......i placed mine on a drying rack and hit it with a box fan...and stoked the wood stove...then rotated the sheets every other day....

drying plywood is a big part of the restoration.....

cheers

so if i understand that correctly ... if i buy the more expensive marine ply ... then it dont have to be dried ? does it still have to be skinned with epoxy ? ... OR would regular ply skinned in epoxy be as good as marine grade ? if so how long does it take to dry ?

Best thing to do is to call the folks at US composites and talk to them about your order and what you are trying to do, they are the experts and can make sure you get the right stuff shipped to your door.

PL is a floor adhesive and it is cheaper to use than buying 3M 5200. There are different grades of PL depending on the use.

As far as the plywood goes, no matter what grade you buy, you will want to seal it well to avoid or at least drastically reduce any problems with rot, plus it will give you a good "primer" for the fiberglass to bond to...just give them a scuff before you start installing them to give the glass something to "bit" into.

that looks good Duckee , you might want to get some heavier E-glass also !! I went with the 10 1/2 oz also !! other then that lookks good !!
what oops said on the wood is the way to dry it , I burned a fan out on mine !!
other then that sounds good !!! John

Re: 70 glastron 17 ft. trihull - project

Hey guys, Nice work on the boats...HARD WORK, but fun I'm sure it takes the mind off all other problems in life...

I'm going in the morning to buy a 1973 Glastron Swinger V176, it has new floor and new carpet, new seats, not sure about the motor, I was told it cut off on the lake and they didn't want to mess with it any more...will not run but I'm gonna check the compression on the cyl's...

The motor sounds a little big for the boat, 175 V6 power trim, I think the motor came out on the boat, but not sure...anyone know if that motor is to big for the boat?

I guess $500.00 is not bad even if the motor don't run, it has a ranger trailor that I will have to do a little converting on...

Anyone here with a 1973 glastron...

Great work guys.....

I have a 1975 V179, and I can tell you that the motor on that boat is too big. Mine is only rated up to 125HP. For 500 bucks though, you can part out that motor and make it back easily. I'd snatch that up if I had the cash to do it.
