Transom screw in pipe plug

Hi guys, my boat has a brass pipe plug in the transom, I trailer my boat so it gets pulled each time, I got tired of having to always have a small cresent on hand so I drilled a hole in the square boss and inserted a stainless steel pin, now finger tight is the plan, do you think it will work loose or leak don't really want to have to teflon tape it every time or I may has well have kept the cresent wrench, my other boat has an expantion plug that I like better but it won't fit the threaded hole. Any other alternatives that won't involve having to use a wrench?

with it only being hand tight i would worry about it falling out just from the vibration. i would just keep the wrench .

If you have the room/access beside the original, drill a new hole and install new drain. Run old plug in flush from the outside, fill inside with 5200. Done deal.

Why do you have to remove it each time? Do you have a leak in your hull that prompts this action?

if you do not remove your plug and keep the bow high, you are asking for major problems. covers leak, get blown off, limbs rip them.

Why not install the plug before you leave the house and then wait till you get home to take it out?
That's what I do.....but then again, my boat don't leak yet...again

I was out again today, just got back all tired and beat up, backed the rig into is spot, it's dark out now, the last thing I always do is lift the bow and pull that plug, It was nice to not have to fumble in the glovebox in the dark for the wrench that fell out and went under the seat or something like that, anyhow the plug didn't vibrate out. I have a pretty good grip and had to give a healthy twist to loosen it up. I just can't see thing coming out from vibration (what vibration) like a bad u-joint? The bilge was dry as it always is when when we're not sking or swimming. This is the first boat that I've owned that had a pipe plug and not a rubber lever or tee style expantion plug, that pipe plug gets screwed in and out so many times a year that I'm thinking the threads could wear out, I don't think its necessary to use anything bigger than a 4" cresent but hand tight with the little tee bar is working for me.

I have ran my last three boats by putting in by hand. Not saying it cant happen but I have never had any problems.

Pipe thread plugs are tapered thread. Thus, they remain tight with just a "snug".
