Volvo 3.0L loud exhaust?

I am new to a 1995 Volvo 3.0L with a SX drive. First time out, I was surprised how annoyingly loud the exhaust was. I notice there are rectangular relief holes about 2" long above the cav plate. These are above the water while on plane and way too loud for my liking. Upon pulling the prop I can see there is no exhaust soot in there at all. Shouldn't the exhaust be making its way out the prop?

Most of the exhaust soot will be washed away by the water.

If you are on plane to that extent with that 3.0 and that heavy drive,someone did a really great job of engineering that package.Do'nt want it?I'll take it.Sounds fun,noise and all.

My last I/O was also 3.0L Alpha and a lot quieter. On this one no water even comes out of the hub when on the hose. My last one had at least some. I am wondering if something is not quite right.

Anybody know for sure if these SX drives just have a louder exhaust relief?

Pull the outdrive and see if the exhaust shutter (aka flapper) broke off and is blocking the exhaust passage to the prop.

I pulled the drive and even split the lower case to look for a blockage. All is clear...from the exhaust manifold down. Nothing looks out of the ordinary. Ran it on the hose and it seems like there is an exhuast leak right at the bottom of the transom shield where there is a square plate. Sacrificial anode? It looks fine, not corroded, but you can feel the exhaust coming straight down. Or is that just the idle exhaust releif? Exhaust bellows are fine because I had them off to inspect them. I talked to the local Volvo dealer and he said the SX drive is loud and they made a baffle kit to quiet them down, but he said he couldn't remember where he saw the bulletin and would have to look into it when he had more time. Ever heard of such a thing?

There are exhaust reliefs in the transom shield. The exhaust system is identical to all the OMC Cobra outdrives and transom shields, so I doubt there is any difference in sound from the Cobra days. Exhaust still goes thru the prop, just like the Cobra.
Never seen any bulletins on noise problems though.

Did you ever figure out why your SX outdrive was so loud? I have the same setup as you describe and it is so annoying. I have ordered the kit to see if it helps. Did you do this?
