New trolling motor, possible problem?

I just ran all 6 gauge wire for my new minn kota 80lb 24v trolling motor. I got it all hooked up and gave it a try in the garage. It seems that in reverse, the rpms are way higher than in forward. 100% reverse is definetly higher rpms
than 100% forward on the variable speed.

I would assume this is not right and wondered if there would be anything I could check or does this just seem like a faulty speed control?

Maybe reverse just sounds like its higher. Guess I could put it in the river tomorrow and try 100% forward than give it a 360 turn and see if reverse is faster?

Well I gave it a try in the river today and I guess all is fine. It just sounds like higher rpms in reverse. I did notice that there is no difference in 75% to 100% in the variable speed control though. Maybe they are all like that?

Either way Im happy with it and the new 6 guage wire I put in.

If anyone has a similar trolling motor, do you notice a difference from 75% to 100% power?

In water test may be misleading. A prop is designed to be most effective moving forward. A prop turning at the same speed will not exhibit the same performance rotating in the opposite direction.

Yeah you have a good point there. Only other thing I can think to do right now is Im fishing a tournament with my friend in 2 weeks and he has the same trolling motor, I will see what he thinks .

Im still thinking there should be a difference from when I put the handle on 75% mark and then to 100% mark.

Rev2973,

I just bought the same motor to put on my seapro. i have to use the 6 gauge wire as well. just wondering what plug you used. Most that i have found accept up to 8 gauge wire. Very few were for 6 gauge wire.
