I need to replace the ignition key switch on a Mercury 1970 115Hp Serial #2930000 any Ideas on wiring a universal 3 or 5 post switch and how I would go about it. Or would the factory reproduction switch be the way to go as the posts would line up with original and all I would have to do is transfer over wires over from the same posts. I also need a manuel and would be interested in a original switch if keys were included. THanks PF

I believe that link to the switch you showed me was to a 1980+ the wire colors do not match up to the colors off the old switch and the black plastic housing looks to be to large to fit in the 1970 mercontrol box. Any Ideas? I could also use a mercontrol switch wiring diagram if someone knows where I can find or see one. The colors coming off the original 5 post key switch are 1Tanish Wire (On Top) then in order to the left 1 Orange (on the 2nd post/ 1 Red (3rd Post) 2 Blacks(4th Post) 1 White and 1 Tanish (coming off the 5th Post)

It you want the ign switch to fit into the MerControl, you should use an OEM. That motor has a distributor, correct? If so, you need to wire the ign switch so it supplies power on the white wire to run the ignition. Grey is choke, black is ground, yellow is solenoid, brown is tach signal.

Mercury changed their color codes in the early eighties but most ignition colors did not change. Hope this helps -
