Rear anchor question...

I'm looking to add a rear anchor to my arsenal and with an 18' bow rider I don't have the room to store another fluke type anchor. I was thinking that I would get a small (3lb) grapnel anchor for the rear but wanted to see what others think about it.

The typical situation is anchored on a sand-bar with my fluke anchor on the sand and the grapnel would be on the sandy bottom. I also considered that using the fluke may be better on the rear and the grapnel on the sand since the hooks fold in and are safer for people walking by.

Would a grapnel be effective as a rear anchor on a sandy bottom?

i use both fluke, large bow, small stern, here is bro in law walking stern anchor it shore.

I use a 3lb folding Canoe anchor for my Stern anchor and a 15lb mushroom for the bow on my 14' Alumacraft. it holds quite well. In fact at times Im only using one anchor, I tie the 3lb off the bow since I would rather be pulling on a 3lb anchor then a 15lb.

anchoring that alumacraft is a lot different than anchoring his bow rider, or my deck boat. mines, 4500Lbs.

Your anchor weighs 4500lbs, 2 1/4 tons. How big is your boat?

Mine's just under 2500lbs on an average boating day (once all people are on the sand) and it definitely needs a fluke up front. The rear is just to prevent it from swinging into other boats but still needs to have a good amount of hold.

On the last boat I had two flukes because I had room to store them but there's very little storage on this boat. The front anchor is under one of the bow cushions and the rear would probably go under the rear seat or in the ski locker. Now that I think about it tho, the ski locker may be the best place for the front anchor since I don't have to kick anyone out of their seat to get to it.

I have a 18ft bowrider and I thought I could get away with a grapnel style anchor for my stern. It does not hold well at all in sand, barely does anything and in my opinion was a waste of money. I am replacing it with a fluke style, maybe a little smaller than my main anchor for storage reasons.

You might want to consider a collapsible box anchor.
They set very easily and don't require lots of scope.
They also fold up for storage.

The box seems interesting but cost is very prohibitive. I'll have to see what I can find in a small fluke style for the stern.
