Hi Guys, I have a 1987 125 hp force outboard that has no spark on one cylinder, (bottom cylider), I have traced back to CDI box, (traced back by swaping input to coil, connected to different CDI o/p and spark returned to plug).

Question I have is, if a CDI box goes bad, since each box feeds 2 cylinders, when a cdi box fails would I not lose spark on both cyliders? not just one ?also is there anything that I should test that could possible cause this trouble before the CDI box ? I do not have a manual for this motor.

Just one side of a cd module can go bad, and often does.

Yes, you need to make sure the cd is getting a "fire" signal from the trigger.

If you swap the cd modules, you will be able to tell if the cd is bad, or if it is getting the signal from the trigger.

Make sure you mark all the wiring so as not to get it mixed up.

Re: 125 HP Force cdi question

I had the same problem with my 1986 125 hp Force. I kept loosing spark on #1. I would change cdi boxes and spark would come back for a very short time on #1 and then I would loose it. I traced the problem back to the stator. Change the stator now it runs great.
I bought a couple good complete ignition systems off e-bay and had no problems with quality. I was able to re-sell the parts I didnt need and make some of my money back. I would check e-bay before dropping over $200 per cdi. I bought a complete ignition for $140 and sold the coils and trigger. Good luck!

He is right! I got a complete ignition system from ebay for $150. Instead of selling the extra parts I decided to keep them. I even ordered a extra stator for $25. One can never have to many extra parts when it comes to the prestolite ignition.
