Hi everyone
I have seen in the search that this is a common question but I am still having a little trouble here and would appreciate any help I can get. I have a 73? 65hp Evinrude with a bad tilt tube in it. I have gotten the starboard side nut removed but there appears to be a second nut recessed in both sides of the transom bracket. Am I going to have to remove the motor from the transom and dissemble this housing.

Thanks for any help here

After 25 years, I had to think about that one a bit. I'm quite sure one of them is a fake with no threads inside....merely a spacer. They did that so the tube could be reversed end for end if your cable comes down the other side of the boat.

Thanks for speedy reply F R. After 25 years this tube is giving me a headache.
I will post the results or the damage later.

Thank you for the info Tashasdaddy. After carefully tapping around with a hammer we have come to the same conclusion. Pulling the motor off today. the tube is not moving.

Those bolts holding the motor to the transom do not look like the correct ones. Too small.

Once that tube is out there's nothing holding the motor at the top of the transom brackets. You'll have to support the motor to get pressure off the tube. If you don't support the motor be sure to keep an eye on your fingers.

Re: 73' 65 hp Evinrude tilt tube

Thanks for all the replies guys. Lastest update. After carefully removing the motor from the transom and using lots of PB lub and alittle heat. We were able to carefully hammer the end of the steering tube into a useless ball of metal. We tried. Motor is now in the shop awaiting the professionals to perform magic on it. I think its better this way than make it any worse.

Jimmbo I checked the transom bolts and for a larger bolt I would have to drill out the transom plate. Might just be an illusion from the wide angle photo.

Thanks for your help everyone. :)
