I know they only made these in the late 60's and early 70's. Couple of questions:

1. are parts still easy to come by new. if so where?

2. i have a part that is worn out on mine that I dont know what its called or where I can get it. Its the gear by the pull string that is plastic. its small and i guess the one that grabs the big main gear. anyways, its worn down and I need a new one, but dont know where to find this part. I would like a source though to find any parts in the future. (impellar, carb kits, and seals).

thanks

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

The starter pinion is PN 384597 and is available through any BRP dealer or direct from BRP online: http://shop.evinrude.com/

Many aftermarket parts are available from iboats.

A factory service manual for your motor will be a valuable accessory.

The parts manuals are on line: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

There are a few parts that are not commonly available for the 9.5HP series, but I have found all of them through sea-way.com in Seattle, WA

if your talking about that little football shaped thing-ive broken one and you dont want to break one on the lake, when it breaks without a spare how you gonna start it- i carry 2 in my tackle box along with extra shear pins for the prop. ive been stranded a few times for lack of spare parts that everyone should carry.

What you need in the toolbox is a rope with a knot in the end. In emergencies you wrap it around the flywheel and pull. Keep it simple.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

i appreciate it guys. i am new here and that was a good quick response.

Another question. I am someone that has no problem opening something up and doing something myself...thats how I learn and i am not usually intimidated. On the other hand, I am totally new to working on outboard motors.

Would replacing the seals on the lower unit, replacing the impeller and cooling system, and just the normal maintenance stuff that has to be done on an outboard something you guys think I could handle myself?

thanks again.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

Joho5, you should be able to find most everything you are going to want to replace right here in iboats. Myself I try not to take things apart as much as I used to, and in return it seems the things I now work on are readiley avalibile. Is the plastic part your talking about mounted with a sort of spring? And worn/rounded on the other end? If so should be an easy fix.

These are easy to work on. But get an OEM factory manual; there is no better thing to have.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

i had never worked on an outboard until i had a johnson 6hp thrown in when i bought my dinghy, i managed to take the lower unit off, replaced whole water pump including aluminium housing and retainer assembly etc. cleaned up the drive shaft...pretty proud of myself although i know for the more experienced this is an easy easy job...moral of the story is go for it, just get a manual...but not a clymer!!! the clymer has drawings that arn't quite correct which p"#sed me right off after spending $80 Aussie dollars!!!

good luck!!

I find any other OMC small outboard to be easier to work on than that 9.5hp.
However, the carb seems easy to get to and the lower unit doesn't seem to be any problem at all. The motor mounts and powerhead look like a nightmare to me and I hope I never have to fool with 'em.

Honestly, they're really not as hard as everyone makes them out to be. You take your time, and they're as easy as anything else. Rush into something and you're in for a world of hurt.

Just like anything else.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

Mind if I tag onto this discussion? I'm working on my starter assembly, too, and I'm going to need the same plastic gear -- so thank you.:)

I want to be absolutely sure I order the right one, though. My model number looks more like an Evinrude number than like a Johnson number. It's 9422RA, but I don't see it listed as either Evinrude or Johnson. Could somebody shed some light on that?

The main thing, though, is that I think my recoil spring is broken. When I wind the center pin CW, the spring tensions; but CCW, it slips. I'm pretty sure it needs to go CCW to tension the starter cord, but I haven't done this before and would appreciate you comments before I spend $65:eek: on something I didn't really need to replace.

Thanks a lot, folks.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

9422 is the model number for a Evinrude 9.5HP 1964 model. The alpha suffix is a model run within the year and probably some changes, because that was the first year for the 9.5.

I would call sea-way.com in Seattle WA and give them the model number to be sure that you are getting the correct parts, but I know the starter pinion in 1965 was 309702 which I understand supersedes to 384957.

Re: johnson 9.5 outboard

honestly if it tensions, i dont think its broke. you might just check the bottom of the assembly where the spring connects. There is a U shaped plastic piece that fits onto a little small pin or bar. The bar goes in the U and it keeps it from slipping. From what it sounds, it sounds like its not the spring, but either where it connects or that little plastic U piece on the end of the spring.

let us know when you get an update.

ps to everyone: I did manage to pull my lower unit off and replace all the seals. water was getting in the lower unit so i did that. now i got my pinion part in the mail and I will try to assemble that together.
