JJ88..... Freddy has a point. I just backtracked thru all of the posts and do not see a mention of a model number to determine exactly what engine you have.

It's possible that you may have a straight electric shift engine, and not a hydro electric shift. In which case, a free spining propeller in the previous mention test would be normal.

What is the model number of your engine?

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

Thre was no 60 horepower with electric (non-hydro) shift. Also, if it has thru-the-prop-hub exhaust, it is not electric (non-hydro) shift.

On the other hand, if it is a 3-cylinder 60hp with thru-hub exhaust, it is a 1970-71 with Hydro-Electric.

jj88.... There should be a plate on the port transom bracket with the Model & Serial number imprinted upon it. If the plate is missing, as F_R indicates, let us know if that engine has a thru the propeller exhaust setup not.

If you have a digital camera and can upload the pic to your computer, it might also be useful to post the photo here. That will aid in the identification process.

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

The three cylinder engine with a thru prop hub exhaust setup and shift wires leading to the lower unit indicates that you indeed have a Hydro Electric Shift engine.

My previous reply (#19) stands.

Bummer,#19 it is then.
I tried "forcing" it into fwd by jumping grn/blu(rev), with shift lever in fwd then disconnecting and reconnecting rev jumper several times while the motor is turning over.....no luck.

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

Something that just occurred to me is that, in your initial post, you made a comment that suggested that the gearbox had no lube in it when you got the motor. This makes me wonder if the previous owner had been running it that way. I hope this is not the case!

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

Got brave and dropped the lower unit, good thing too, Water pump impeller totally destroyed. Woodrife key below plate, rubber in plastic drop tubes.
The solinoids are functioning, cleaned each, but at closer look(someone has disassembled before me)it appears the solinoids have been reversed, would this cause a problem, and is there a return spring somewhere, other than the spring washer on the top of the unit? Going to get parts for the impeller unit now.

Also should the hyd. unit be completely filled with lube and which solinoid is the bottom one, grn, or blu.

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

I don't think it is possible to install the solenoids in the wrong order, is it.? Certainly not without taking the whole assembly apart. The rod for the upper one goes down thru the rod for the lower one.

It should be full of oil up to the upper (vent) plug.

Exellent information, waiting on the impeller now. I now know it's a '70-'71 model year, do the letters in the model # ESL stand for "Electric Shift Longshaft" and what is the difference in the last letter B,D('70) C,E (71)? Still working on the shift, taking a day off.

Re: johnson 60hp hydroelectric drive

I finally got the lower unit broke down, what a task. Found the filter screen on the hyd. pump had some ice damage causing the screen to erupt, sending fines to the piston, binding it. Replaced the screen and cleaned everything. Lower unit now shifts, I got lucky there was no damage to the pump itself, replacement cost is over $500.00, paid that much for the whole boat. Will put water to it today.
