gas tanks question

i have a 6 gallon orange metal tank is there suppose to be a vent on it. everytime i open the tank air rushes in. or when im at wot the engine stutters sometimes and then runs fine for a while. and the motor doesnt really like to stay running at low rpms i dont know if that has anything to do with the venting of the tank.

metal tanks have a built in vent, they let air in, but not out, or it would be a fuel spill problem.

i dont think the vent is working properly then. should there be a vaccume in the tank. every time i open the cap air gets sucked in. maybe the vent is plugged. is there a way to fix it.

Go for a short run with the cap off and see if it still stutters.

Is there a small metal knob in the center of the gas cap ? If so, thats the vent..unscrew that knob a few turns counterclockwise and the "vent" should be open

mercury had the vent screw, J/E had the auto vent.

well i ran the motor yesterday and it ran good i didnt loosen the cap on the tank. so im thinking the motor needs a tune up. i will get that done next year before i take it out on the water. thanks for your suggestions though
