K&N makes a USCG airfilter/flame arrestor for some applications.

Is there a lot of dog hair and dirt in your bilge area? I don't see how you would really need an air cleaner with a clean bilge.

couple years ago, my buddy put a K&N on his 4.3. he had the same problem, dog hair. the K&N came with a foamy spongy thing that went around the FA. guess he liked it better to clean that than the FA..... oh, his bilge was spotless. always 2 dogs onboard though......

I remember reading somewhere, marine applications don't normally use an air cleaner because of the fire hazard.
I use a USCG approved K&N.

best of my knowledge, that's what it was. a K&N, uscg approved, fa, with a foam piece that went around it. and your right. marine don't use air filters, no need for them. generally speaking.... except for dog hair apparently..... myself, i don't know. i got cats + an oem mercruiser fa which i like just fine......

I think if fire hazard wasn't there, you would see air cleaners on all boats.
Clean filtered air is important to the engine.

what he said... it doesn't take many pieces of dust... especially sand / silica to wear away some metal where you kinda wanted to keep it...

Been a marine tech for many years, never seen an IO marine engine worn out. They always die from water, lack of maintenance, freeze damage, or over-propping. But never worn out.

EDIT: dog hair will not go thru the FA, or destroy the engine if it did.
