Hello,
I'm new to this site and I see there is a bunch of info on mercury motors here. I did a search on the motor stated above but couldn't find much out. I'm thinking about buying a boat with this motor on it. I had the guy's mechanic on the phone and asked him some questions about the motor.

He said compression on all cylinders were at 130.
Stator was replaced last year. Has the 16 amp stator.
water pump was replaced this year.
Alarms were checked all fine.
Motor wasn't operated in saltwater.
Ask about the oil injection pump. He says functions properly.
He says it fires up good. Tends to take a couple more cranks on motor after it is warm to get running. Mechanic say's, this is because cyl.'s load up a little at shutdown. Sound correct?
I got to hear motor fire up on phone sounded good. I will be testing the boat before purchase but distance is a issue right now.
I forgot to ask if that h.p. rating of 200 is at the crank or the prop? Does anyone know?
Do you guy's know of anything else I should ask?
Does this motor sound like it's a o.k. motor?

Owner say's he used fuel conditioner all the time and mechanic say's owner takes good care of equipment. Boat is in impeccable shape at least in pictures and from what his mechanic say's.
Does concern me because owner thought it was a 1990 motor.

Is there any other inherent problems with these motors?

I thank you for your time.

Engine is 1984.... The horsepower is crankshaft, not prop....

Hope that helps in your decision making process....

That helps, thanks. I'm not sure how long a 2 stroke will last and what about resale value in 5 yrs. NADA says motor is worth $630 high value.

Do you guys think that if I were to run it for another 5 years and try to sell boat and motor the age of the motor would scare buyers away? Motor would be 30 yrs old then.

Thanks.

Motor is 25 years old. It may or may not have been gone through before. It may have a few hours on it, or a gazillion.

It sounds like it is in really good condition. If you run it and it sounds good and is strong, it should last for awhile.

Like any motor, there is no way to tell how long it'll stand up. A lot depends on how it's treated, and a lot depends on luck.

Hey, gamblin's fun too, isn't it?

BTW, I run a 20 year old XR4 like I stole it. Surface the prop, overwind it, and otherwise disobey the rules of longevity. I run good oil in it, (synthetic) and make sure it's cool.

hope it helps

Thanks John. Would it make any differance if it had a outboard jet pump on it?

Goes slower, makes more noise, and will run in shallow water without prop damage (no prop)

You can always put a real foot on it.

hope it helps
