1997 25hp mariner.. LOW hrs, i bought it new and used it maybe 10 times since..
Anyhow.. it was a son of a gun to start.. so i figured I would clean the carb.. I went to the dealer and bought oem quicksilver rebuild kit.. rebuilt the carb even though it looked mint inside and out..
Heres the problem... when i go to pull start it, it will kick back and nearly jerk my arm out of socket.. It is a real pain to get it to fire up, but once running, it revs strong and idles perfect..... Does it seem like a timing issue? It used to pull smooth and if it did not fire up it would just turn over. Now it locks up when i pull it over, I think it is firing before it should and the piston tries to go back down. I am a jetski mechanic, never worked on outboards but i am willing to dive into this sucker.. any pointers would be appreciated

Re: HELP.. need expert advise.. on 25 hp mariner

I am not familiar with this model per se, but I may be able to help.

Check the flywheel key to see if it has partially sheared.

Does this motor have a mechanically variable timing setup where the timing and ignition system is somehow rotated during the throttle process, or is it fully electronic whereby the throttle only actuates the carb?

If it is mechanically variable and the key is ok, get the manual and do the link and sync procedure.

If it is fully electronic in it's spark advance process, it may need to be static timed and checked by light? by the manual.

And just generally speaking from a person that has had a lot of starter handles painfully yanked from my hand, it is important on some motors to pull the rope slowly till almost the complete compression stroke is complete, recoil the rope then give her a go. That way when pulling the rope it starts the flywheel spinning with enough inertia to get past the ignition phase without firing back.

yes, if i turn the throttle, there is a linkage that moves the carb and it looks like the linkage also is attatched to mechanically advance timing.
I have never touched it since new, and if you saw the engine you would think it looks mint, so i find it strange that it could be out of adjustment.
Thanks for any input... i was thinking of pulling the flywheel off to look at the keyway.. Any pointers I should do when pulling the flywheel? thanks

Re: HELP.. need expert advise.. on 25 hp mariner

For pulling any flywheel I suggest having enough tool to do the job.

By that I mean (usually) an air impact gun for the retainer nut and to work the puller. I have a 3/8 impact gun that works most of the time, or use the 1/2 inch gun that I use regularly and have a good feel for it's power.

I'm not sure what type is required for your flywheel. Either a three bolt steering wheel type puller, or one that screws into the flywheel around the shaft.

If you use the steering wheel type make sure you use the higher strength (usually noted by an 8 or 10 on the head) correct metric bolts, and grease the threads and tip of puller bolt.

I run an older 25hp mariner and I don't think it has ever jerked back, although a 20-25hp manual start motor of any brand can require some manly pulls sometimes, especially on those cool mornings of choking.

once warmed up I usually pull till it's partway through the compression stroke, let the rope in "for another bite" then give it a two hand short brisk pull...Vrooooom

ok,, i pulled the flywheel and the keyway was perfect as well as the key. All looks in great shape.
I did pull the coils apart and found that the magnet stuff on either side of both coils was cracked.. It looks like a piece of tape is holding it together, but it was like this on both of them from the factory...not the crack, just the tape..
Could this cause an issue? What the heck is that for... its like a carbon type stuff that is around each coil... does a new coil assy come with that?
