40 hp japan made mariner runs bad and what year?

What is the year serial#6E9L403378 40EHP outboard. Also engine runs fine till a load is put on it. When load no power makes a little popping noise. Is this electrical or fuel if so where to look?

Could be either fuel or spark, or other.

Where do you want to start?

Compression?

Fuel system service?

Electrical component testing?

Most of these things are just normal procedures used on so many poorly running outboards, and can be found in a service manual.

I don't know what year model it is.

Has good compression and good spark to each plug.Put in water under load no power. Not sure what to do.Also information on this motor hard to find.

OK, so "according to you" the compression and ignition are functional?

Move on to fuel system service?

(Unless you have tested them with the approved methods they may be still considered suspect if the fuel system service doesn't fix it.)

Thinking of rebuilding both carb's. Hope can find right part's for the right price. This old mariner made in japan has been a nightmare.

Your engine was built in 1982

The motor you have is an old Yamaha motor. Yamaha made the mariner's in the 80's, and I believe they are a lot better than the mercury motors from that century.

And from what I have experienced the same part can be considerably cheaper when purchased with a Yamaha part # and package.
