Hi. I have a 1976 Glassmaster 17ft fiberglass boat with a 2.5L OMC 120hp engine, OMC outdrive.

I believe the model year on engine/outdrive is around 71-72, not entirely sure. My question is, can the mercruiser outdrive be fitted to this? What would require changing/modifying/etc? Thanks in advance.

Merc make an adaptor plate... do a search and you'll find the Merc part number for it........... Alternatively, glass up the old monster size hole and cut for the Mercruiser.

Thanks for the reply. There is a local Merc dealer about 20 miles away, so I'll check with them and see what they come up with for an option.

Last time I looked at that plate it was about $750.00 if you can get one.
I was told the only way to get one was to buy a complete package,BIG $$$$$$
Better take Bond-o's advice.

...if you pay a mechanic and boat shop to do it. If you're handy with wood, fiberglass, hand tools and basic mechanics, it could be a fun project. Don't expect to make $ selling it, but that's not why we own boats, is it?

The plus side is you can do this at your pace, at your spending level.

Yeah. Well we'll see how the OMC drive does I suppose. I'd like to be able to tilt and trim but the only tricky part is getting out into the lake I frequent.

I've discovered some problems with the wiring; someone has added a 2nd solenoid before the starter. I'm not sure why, but the starter has a nasty habit of clicking and not engaging. I do however believe I have nailed the cause.

The Battery + supply wire's lug is loose on the end so I'll pick up another and redo the connections battery and engine side. The outdrive tilt up sometimes only clicks and doesn't engage. So at this point I'll go over all the electrical connections, ensure they are clean and shiny and all loose ends recrimped/etc. That should take care of that.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment on this. The boat is in absolute extraordinary shape for a 1976 and doesn't appear to have been used all that much, so we'll see how far the "White Anchor" goes before it becomes one. :)

Appreciate it.

Hey
I got a white anchor. The things I learned is do the maintenance.
I use triple guard OMC grease,( make sure you grease the swivel bearing good),you might want to get a factory manual you can find them on e bay.
I think you have a electric shift so I don't know what kind of lube you use in the outdrive someone here will help.
I have a 1981 800 stringer drive converted over to full mechanical shift.
I use the grease and OMC synthetic blue outdrive gear lube on all of the drive
including the tilt gear drive, so far no problems.
As far as the click on the tilt motor ya check all connections and grounds.
Mind done the samething I finally had to buy a new motor.

PM me if you need help.
Us white anchers have to stick together.
