Locating Stern Drive Model #

Hello,

I'm new to the site and I have several questions to ask about trim cylinder removal, but first I need to positively identify the model of my stern drive. I have already read several previous posts about this same subject, but I still cannot find my model specific #.

I have a 1993 Volvo 740 (7.4 liter / 454 GM) engine. I have removed the plastic motor cover and spark arrestor cover to expose the carbureator and motor. Even so, I still cannot find a "tag" with any information. I did find the number "338841 GM", which is stamped into the top of the motor block behind the carburator.

On the outdrive I have a stick on label that says "DP co trim".

I have looked at photos on several websites of various "DP" series outdrives. None of which look exactly like mine or appear to have the trim cylinder's pivot end mounted in a recessed fashion that limits access for removal.

Any ideas on where to continue looking for that outdrive model #?

Sounds like you have either a DP-A or B. There should be a tag on the upper gear box, just under the edge of the helmet.

My Lord Don, that was a very fast reply. Thank You!

OK, I will get on that right this instance. I will tell you I am very mechanical, but boats and their component lingo is not my forte. I have some electrolysis on the outdrive and I hope it has not eroded any stamped numbers that I will need to view.

Also, I will google photos of those drives you suggested to see if either matches what I have.

Don,

The graphic you posted was the key to locating the tag. Yes, I found it!

In the top righthand corner I have "872781"

In the center I have: "DP - D 1 78"

Across the bottom I have: "3102141490"

Can you tell me what all those numbers mean? With this information I will start a new thread posting my questions.

The drive is a DP-D, which is the model number. The 1.78 is the gear ratio of the drive, and the 3102141490 is the Volvo Serial number of the drive (not the engine)
PS: That manual link I posted doesn't cover that drive by number, but the DP-C is the same thing.
