I want to get in to boating and I also looking for a winter project boat. I found a local boat here on Craig's list which is a 1983 16' Bayliner. The engine is seized. Apparently two years ago they brought it out on the inter-coastal water way and never flushed the engine and it sat still for the last 2 years. I went and looked at it today and it was covered with a blue tarp. The interior is actually in really good shape. The only issue was the back seat where people get in an out of the boat.

The engine had a little rust but overall in pretty good shape. I think I could rebuild it pretty easy. It was a 4 cylinder 140hp Volvo.

The hull seemed in good shape. The floor boards weren't rotted and they felt sturdy. They only want $700 with the trailer which was in pretty decent shape.

I am looking for a beginner ski / fun / entry boat. Do you guys feel this is a good deal? I have seen you give some strong options on Bayliners but it seems I could put $1500 into this boat which is in pretty good shape and have a fun beginner boat.

Thanks for your opinions!

might be a good boat if he gave it to you. $1500 won't cut it. not knowing about the outdrive. that could be $1500 alone.

$700 doesn't seem like a fair price for a boat that in running condition would still probably only be worth $1500.

Re: 16' used bayliner

I have to agree. I just (2 weeks ago) bought a 1994 Bayliner Capri 1604 (15'7") in near perfect condition, with a running 1994 Force 70, and the original trailer which still looks new. Sure, it needed a cleaning, but the seller even delivered it to my marina, and I was boating the first day. :D Cost? $1000 delivered. :D:D:D My wife even is happy!!!!

Keep looking, be patient, and you will find a great boat at a great price.

Re: 16' used bayliner

Ok, Thanks for the advice. What about somethinglike this?

That is my spending limit. Any advice would be much appreciated since this is my first boat. I wanted a project boat but if I can get somethingin good shape already running for around $4,000 then I would be happy!

Thanks again!

I believe he said that they want $700 for it, including the trailer.

BUT, if the engine is seized because they used it in salt or brackish water and didn't flush it out, I'll be willing the stern drive has issues too.

Figure at least $1000 to rebuild the engine correctly. I'm thinking that if the engine sat for two years with a load of saltwater in it, you will find a rusty, corroded mess inside the engine. You will probably have to replace it because the block may be shot. Personally, because of that, I would opt to replace the whole thing and not have to worry about the integrity of the engine. If the stern drive has saltwater induced problems, you are now talking about a bunch of money for a rebuilt stern drive and all of the related parts. I would offer them $400 (the value of the trailer) and put a bracket and four stroke O/B on it and have fun.

I paid 980(probably too much) for my 85 Bliner 18.5' and it had a freshly remaned outdrive, a running 305 v8 and a good trailer. I had to replace the floor and all the interior. I'd keep looking for something with a good drive unit/engine as that is one of the most expensive things on the boat.
ETA I spent about 1500 in parts on this thing, seats, tilt motor, manifolds, wood, carpet, vinyl, etc
