I have a 1993 SPL 88. I bought the boat about 3 months ago. Ive had problems with gas or the contamination of it with water lately. I found a gas station that sell's ethanol free gas a week 2 weeks ago and try to only use it after reading info on the web about some gas having more that 10% ethanol. I have 2, 6 gallon tanks in my Lowe 170. One I use the majority of the time and the other as a reserve. One trip to the lake a month ago and I switched tanks before running out of gas in the main tank. The motor sounded as if it were running out of gas and then it would pic back up. I stopped and changed back to the main tank and that corrected the problem. After returning home I pumped the reserve tank empty. The first pint looked like water. I put a 3 gallons of fresh gas it the reserve tank and 6 in the main tank. Went to the lake the next week and ran the boat on the main tank, ran fine. The next day I went to another lake, knew I was getting low on gas so I switched the the reserve tank and the engine ran bad again. I didnt change back to the main tank as we were heading back in. Bought new gas and treated with evinrude 2+4 treament and went to lake yesterday. It was running as if it wasnt getting the full flow of gas. I ran down the lake about 2 miles and it smoothed out somwhat. About every 20 to 40 seconds it would surge. I looked for a fuel filter on the motor and could find one, I dont have a manual. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm far from an expert on this stuff but it sounds like you've been having the same problem with the reserve tank with both potentially bad gas and new gas. That leads me to think your problem is either the reserve tank itself or the lines, valves, or fittings for the reserve tank. Chris is right that the primer ball would be a good place to start but it probably isn't the primer ball if you're not having an issue with the main tank.
