Warm up lever movement

Hi All - I have a 1977 70hp Evinrude 70773S. The warm up lever on the remote control (OEM) moves to a higher rpm when in gear. All seems fine until I go back to neutral - then the RPM is too high becasue the warm up lever is lifted up. Push it down all is fine. I thought that the lever should be forced/kept in the lower position when in foreward and reverse. Can anyone verify this? I think there is a problem in the remote control, but I am guessing the correct operation of the Remote Control.

If the warm up lever is in or near the start position, you should not be able to shift gears. Only when the lever is down.

Sounds like something wrong with the control.........

Does the warm-up lever move up when in gear or does it move up when you are shifting back to neutral? If your throttle cable is adjusted too tight, it will force the warm-up lever to move up when shifting back to neutral just about the time it comes out of gear.

Not to hijack a thread, but I've got the same problem with mine only it happens when coming out of reverse. I haven't taken the time to address it yet, because it's only a minor annoyance. Sounds like adding a little slack to the cable is worth trying though. I'd figured it was due to lack of lubrication in the controller.

I'm in the same boat (pun intended). My motor won't idle well so when I come out of gear I don't mind the warm-up going up a bit. Shoots my idle up to about 1000-1100 when I come out of gear and then I just bump the warm-up lever down to get a good idle without stalling. Plan on fixing the idle issue this fall, assuming it a carb issue. I keep my cable a bit over tightened to get maximum movement on my warm-up lever allowing better starting.

But, none of this helps tbharris, I suppose.

Still...I believe that his problem is a symptom of a mis-adjusted throttle cable. I don't have the proper steps to set up the throttle cable correctly with me at this time so hopefully an expert will chime in with the right steps to set the cable correctly for that motor.

Hopefully that's it, cuz it's an easy fix:)

When I move from in gear (both forward and reverse) to neutral the lever moves to a higher rpm. Randyg123- it seems like it is what you are describing. Will this happen in reverse as well?

With the cable disconnected from the motor, adjust the idle speed. Then adjust the cable nut so that it just does pull the lever (on the motor) back against the idle stop when in neutral and warm-up lever down.

Thanks FR for supplying the proper steps to adjust the cable. I knew it was going to be a simple process!
