1993 Volvo 7.4 ltr. / DP-D outdrive

I'm trying to remove the steering pin to roll back the steering helmet on my outdrive. I have a shop manual for the DP-C outdrive and it says to take (2) 6m x 30mm bolts and insert one into the holes on the left and right sides of the steering pin. Supposedly, this will force the steering pin out. Is this the same procedure for my DP-D outdrive as well. It looks the same as the photo in the DP-C manual? Well, I don't have any bolts of that size and I don't know where I would find any. Even so, I don't see any threads in those 2 holes, only a white powder that looks like corrosion. Are there any other ideas to remove the steering pin?

Also, I don't have the "special tools" this manual calls for to remove the pins that connect the hook-up fork to the transom shield. Any ideas how I can remove those pins with ordinary tools? Which way do they back out, inward or outward?

Thanks!
Keith

Re: 2 questons about outdrive removal

Update....

I just received a call back from a local source. (2) 1/4" bolt will do the trick he says and I've already gotten the steering pin out.

So, I still need help with removing the pins that connect the hook-up fork to the transom shield.

Thanks!
Keith

Re: 2 questons about outdrive removal

I have a 1991 VP 290DP and have been successful at this. There are two bolts to remove, make sure those are out, then the steering pin can come out and the helmet can move up. Have the drive steering straight ahead and drive down. You may have to tap on it some if it is corroded, move the steering wheel just a little each way after the bolts are out, this may relieve some stress and also work on the corrosion-stickiness. The "other" holes on mine did not appear to be threaded either. The pin came out fairly easily, even though at first it seemed like it was in pretty tight.

I think there are some other tricks for the hinge pins, I have not had to take my drive all the way off yet. I serviced the drive bellows, u-joints and raw water pickup nipple and hose by removing just the upper housing of the drive.

Hopefully Don S will show up later and give you some more tips, he is a VP certified tech, there are others here as well. I am not a boat mechanic but I play one on the internet:)

All luck to you.

All the information in the DP-C manual is identical to the DP-D manual. So don't let that worry you a bit. Yes, 1/4-20 bolts work. Just an FYI, I usually just use a screw out of the back cover to remove the helmet pin, 1 usually works.

The pins for the fork can be knocked inward. Just turn the steering (and helmet) so the pins will clear when pushed inward against the bellows.
After you remove the locking bolts for the pivot pins, use a brass punch and knock the pins inward. DO NOT use a steel punch It iwll expand the pin and you will have a heck of a time getting them out.

OK I'll start rounding up the tools I need and get started immediately.

Now, once I disconnect those hinge pins the drive just pulls straight out, correct? I see no mention of disconnecting the universal joint. Am I correct in assuming this is a 2 piece sliding shaft from the universal back toward the motor? I picture this shaft being similiar to an adjustable length PTO shaft between a tractor an implement.

Yes, the driveshaft will come out with the drive.

Yes, it will just pull off.................. Well, unless it's had water in the bellows for a long time and it's rusted itself to the shaft. But that's another problem.

PROBLEM RESOLVED!

I have been a professional firefighter for the past 22 years. I have made helping others my life's work, but there are times when I too need a helping hand.

This website is amazing. I appreciate all the help you gentlemen have give me more than you will ever know. Don S., you have made my Christmas card list! There is no telling how much you have saved me in repairs over these past 3 days and I can never repay you. The money I have saved following your technical assistance will provide for more gas in the boat... which equals more time to make memories with my 2 little boys when they are on my custodial time.

Sincerely,
Keith Wilder
Raleigh, NC

PS... I'm almost there one more problem to tackle then I can start the rebuild. Next post... ;)
