Substitute for Amplifier Assembly?

I've got the 71 100 hp Johnson with an intermittant Capacitive Discharge Amplifier Assembly. Is there anyone who has substituted car parts or other discreet electronic parts for the stock amp box? It seems pretty simple to duplicate but not sure if its been done or not?

It has been done many times on motors that have breaker points (yours does). Does it work well? I'm still waiting to hear the first report that it does. Maybe there's one out there somewhere.

Re: Substitute for Amplifier Assembly?

I may give it a try.
My 1970 85hp has a problem that I just narrowed down to the amplifier box and since it will be awhile until I have $200+ to spend on a new one I will try almost anything once.

From what I can tell is that all the amplifier box is for is to boost the voltage going to the coil to 240 volts. This may be so the coil can be smaller.

I figure if you put a regular old auto coil on in it's place and also put on a condenser so the points won't fry, it should work.

My only problem is that I have dual points and I'm not sure how these would work with that setup.

any ideas would be helpfully

Jon
