I've seen bigger boats then that beach on the Illinois river here in the Morris area. Just look for a nice sandy spot with a decent drop off.

I beach our 24 ft boat so the kids can play. Noticed that it is wearing the finish on the fibreglass. Thinking about getting the keel-guard.

ok, how do you beach, 20mph and hope she makes it? just pull up and force her on? go as fast as she'll go, shut the engine and raise the drive? Get the kids to jump up and down and drive on?

I had removed my stern anchor from my boat to save a little weight while looking to lighten my load. Wouldn't ya know I needed it the next month while on the sandbar off Tarpon Springs. I too set the bow anchor and back in to get the stern close and then set the stern anchor up on the beach.

Doing it this way, you are only limited by your draft as far as how close in you can get.

I'd like to see bandits show, that would be neat. :p

the Chris Craft Draft with the drive up is 2 feet, so we just walk in, knee deep water.

Hey TD nice disappearing island pics.

You know Bluewater makes 60' yachts that are built to beach and come with a bow ladder/ stairway. pretty cool boats 2' draft at the back with the gas motors you could put it just about anywhere.

I say don't be afraid to set your boat on the beach and do it all the time. One thing to remember is your sanding the bottom so slinging it up on the sand is probably not a great idea.

If you look at TD'd pics you can see that on that side of the island it's real shallow on the approach which makes it a pain cause a little change in tide height and your high and dry. This really makes anchoring off the beach the best thing to do at that spot. It's close to the stage so it's a popular spot.

If you go over to the other side of the island it's not so bad but you have a narrow channel to navigate. There everyone beaches their boat instead of anchoring.

But then on the south side away from the big party it drops right off and you can get any boat to the shore. It's five feet deep five feet off the sand and drops fast into the channel where everyone anchors up for the weekend.

Of course that's only right if TD is where I think he is, but point is don't be scared to beach or anchor off just do what's best for the conditions.

If I am right about location I beach my 18' center console there all the time.

Re: what's the biggest boat you'd beach?

tash d; if we beach stern first we have to stay 3 or 4 feet from the beach and wade in, or the out drive will hit. if we anchor bow in we can step off on to beach and not get feet wet.
i think the difference is how steep the banks are. in the first pic of our boat i have 6 ft, under the drive and the second is over 13 ft. i have my depth sounder zeroed with the drive at the trim up stop. i think the water level is a 1 1/2 or so above that. that way if the warning buzzer goes off i can raise drive all the way up and still not get stuck. thats the plan any way

i can see where you guys will be grounded if you try to get as close to shore as we are able. generaly we try to stay out of the water when ever water temp is less than 60 deg or so. making it more of a thing to stay dry
once in a while we anchor bow out but a lot of times the waters so deep it takes so much rode that its easer to just nose in and throw out a coulpe of lines. we do have a good keil sheild

thash d; on that last pic where your walking your anchor line in i dont see any rocks.
how in the heck can you camp and play like that? nothing to hold your stuff down or make a fire ring out of. nothing for the kids to throw at each other or for you to toss at them to get their attention. and then theres having to walk around with nothing to trip over.

NSBCraig, Yep disappearing island, Ponce Inlet, channel side. great place to beach and spend the day when it's rough outside. i'm headed to Little Torch Key, Friday for 10 Days. you definitely have to anchor off there, or the coral will eat your boat.

i always send someone up front to check for half-buried surprises in the sand like rocks. take it slow, you don't want to come in at ramming speed.

Re: what's the biggest boat you'd beach?

I boat small inland lakes so I do have the option to beach the boat with the bow towards the beach. I always use 2 lines regardless of how I beach the boat. I do that to keep that boat in place as I try to keep the keel of the sand. Wonder is that is still beaching??? ;)
If I were beaching in a place with big waves or high traffic I would definitely beach with the stern towards the beach.
