I have seen this term used occassionally but am not sure what it really means. Can someone explain what "chine walking" is?

I had an 88 Charger SK with a 200 Yamaha. Over 75 mph it would chine walk. Took nerves and a good hand to control. Can be scarey as poop:eek:

It appears that it is a hull design/motor/speed function rather than choppy water or hitting a wake? Kind of like "wheel wobble" on a skateboard when you get going too fast to control?

Mostly. Basicly the hull rises out of the water too far and becomes unstable, the only saving graces are the chines on either side of the hull that catch the water as the hull tips and prevents it from flipping over.

The puropse of a chine is to allow airflow under the hull, therefore providing lift and reducing drag. Most hull designs require some protion of the chine to be submerged at any given point for stability. The only exception to this (that I know of) is the new fast trak hulls by Four Winns and Chaparral.
