I'm trying to find out the year of an old Evinrude Fast Twin 18 outboard I recently purchased. The id plate on the motor has stamped serial numbers that read: 15922-03498 The guy I bought it from said he thought it was a 1958 model. Tried to verify on evinrude.com but had no luck.
What year is this? I hope that after a carb refresh and new coils it will be as much fun as the one I used as a kid in the summer times chasing Hydros around on Lake Washington.
Thanks for any information

That's a 1957, bohnzy.

Be sure to use a 24:1 fuel mix, Champion J4C plugs gapped at .030", and set the magneto points at .020".

Thank you, Hmm, it's as old as I am!
I did the compression test an it hold 119 lbs on each hole. So-far-so-good.
I am now preparing to do the "refresh" on it to include; carb kit with float, new coils and tune-up kit and new impeller.
Do you have experience that I can gain from on accomplishing these tasks? Tricks of the trade or other advice of things I need to do?
Thanks Again!

The best kept secret of the trade of messing with old OMC outboards is the Johnson Service Manual, tenth edition. It was published in 1964.

Wouldn't know where to find one, but I would start on eBay.

You might easier find the factory manual for that engine. If iboats doesn't have it, try www.kencook.com or www.outboardbooks.com.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Again,
I'm puzzled, I can't find ANYTHING on a fuel pump kit or unit. This motor is not one with the presurized tank. Iboats and all others do not list anything for this era fuel pump parts. It has been my experience that this is one of the things to refresh on any motor.
Any help?

Someone probably converted your 18 to a fuel pump. If you can take a photo of the pump, someone will probably be able to identify it. However, I wouldn't replace it unless it's defective. They tend to last a long time.

Dittos to JB, too, on the 1964 Master manual. It covers everything from early models up to the 1964 40 hp.

If you have it, you can work on any of the smaller engines. Ken Cook does have it. In fact that's what he supplied when I ordered a manual for my 1958 RDS20.

Re: Ken Cook Site

Hi, thanks for the input. I have been to the Ken Cook site; how in the heck do I search to locate the 1964 master manual you speak of? I pnly see a search for mfg/model/year...nothing for master under 1964.
Thanks,

Simple. The phone number and e-mail address are both right there on the home page. Tell them what you want.

The fuel pump that you are asking about on your johnson probably came off of a later model Evinrude. I have a 58 Johnson that is a pressurized tank, and a 58 Rude that is a pump. Both of these are 18hp Fastwins. The only difference is the way the cowling opens, and the fuel delivery system. The Rude's generally had the advanced systems, and this was prevalent in the fuel delivery system. I had to do some hard looking to find that this was actually a factory option for 1958 on the 18 hp Fastwins. Good luck finding a pump kit for it. You will probably have to change it out for a newer model pump off of a 20hp. This is the only pump that will actually replace it and not lean out or flood the engine. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your motor. They are TANKS!!!:D:D:D
