Hi All,

Well we went to the Atlantic city air show yesterday(about 15 miles away). We were doing about 3800 rpms and at one point I sped up a little bit and heard a chirp from my warning system. So I backed down the throttle to about 3800 and everything seemed fine. It can not be oil because I mix and do not use VRO. Peace of mind. So I looked back and could see the water pumping and felt the pressure which seemed good. But if it was overheating it should be a constant alarm and the motor will idle down automatically I believe. Well it happened again as we were arriving to the inlet when I had to give it some gas and we noticed it was not pumping. I slowed down immediately and it just kind of lazily came out. So we went into calmer water at about 2000rpms and I tilted her up and checked for blockage and nothing. Started back up and it pumped but not like it should. Looks like the water pump is bad and I had Boat US tow us back. DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!! It does not appear I overheated in any way as the engine did not automatically idle down and see no performance issues at this time. Starts fine etc.... Don't know if my theory is correct but I bet when i accelerated, something really happened to the fingers on the impeller. It's old and definitely needs a new water pump. I've done some research here on changing the pump but wanted to get some more input. Is it as simple as buying the water pump kit, dropping the lower unit just enough so the gear shaft does not come out, use an alen wrench to removed the water pump housing and replace, apply the correct gaskets and bolt back up? I also want to change my thermostats I think. Seems logical but have know idea how yet. Thanks!!

The lower unit comes off. Not really sure what you mean by "dropping the lower unit just enough so the gear shaft does not come out". No allen wrenches needed.

Make sure the shift rod height is correct when it goes back on. "I'm not going to change the shift rod height" doesn't count. Set it just before you slide it back on. Good time to change gear oil too. And your water seperator filter. makes keeping track of dates easier. We write the date on the filter. Time flys.

By dropping I mean just unbolting but not to far as to disengage the shift rod. Read it could be difficult to get back on. The alen wrenches are used to remove the housing on the water pump from what I know. Seems pretty straight forward but I've never done it. I worry about making sure everything seals up properly. I don't want lower unit issues afterwards. May just pay to get it done.......still thinking. Thanks!!

No allen wrenches needed ... see above! Since you don't seem to have any idea how to do this, get the complete BRP kit from an Evinrude dealer (it comes with instructions, which you clearly need).

Agree. If you don't unhook the shift the unit only drops about 1/2" or so and nothing supports the weight of the unit if it's tilted at all. Plus the driveshaft won't clear so I have no idea how the pump housing would get past it. The pump housing is held on by bolts (not allen screws) but they will still be inside the midsection if the shift isn't undone.

Thanks guys. I'll probably end up having it done. I know it's not rocket science but having not done it i'm sure there would be some confusion along the way. Getting it done equals no headaches or questions if it was done right. Too much at stake. You can't put a price on peace of mind.
