Re: American pronounciation

My wife and I have trouble understanding each other often, as we speak different languages, I speak American English, and she speaks British English. :D

There are a lot of expressionless stares with each other as we try to translate our conversations, or make the word recognizable. Most of the time I just smile and say 'yes Dear'. ;)

My favorite is 'Put the toilet pump (plunger) in the boot (trunk).' This was when we were moving, and I had no clue what she was asking of me. Almost daily, something is said that we have to translate. Keeps it interesting.

Very similar thing here. My wife is Canadian and I am English. When we had family visiting from England she used to have terrible trouble understanding us when we got going in our "Native tounge". Now she is with us all the time after many years of listening and practice !!!!

My wife is Honduran and speaks Spanish. I'm just plain old American (Irish). Don't think I actually undstood more than two or three things she said since we got married in '98.

:D:D:D

One of my favorite phone calls of all time when like this:

Wife: Hello.
Caller: Hello, this is State Farm Insurance, is Mark there?
Wife: Hold on a minute, I have to go find him...
Me: Hello?
Caller: Hi Mark, this is State Farm. Was just talking with your cleaning lady....
Me: Thats my Wife....
Caller: Oh.... (very long pause)... About your auto policy....

In 1956, I was smitten with the lines of an XJ6 jaguar, but too young to even drive, then around 1963, I loved the new XKE jaguar, and never ended up with either one, but nowadays, someone coined the yuppie name jag-U-ar, I guess to boost the price? or to raise the prestige of the car  I just laughed my butt of, the first time I heard it :D Boy, it's funny how those rich folk talk :D

Or in "commoners" England it is known as a "Jag" often referred to like that just before they steal the wheels and leave it on 4 piles of bricks !!!!

Good thing we got that sorted . . . or maybe we got it sussed, I am thinking we got it figerred out, or maybe we got that down. Probably we have bounced that around some or even kicked it around or run it up the flagpole. But I prefer when we get past the sticky wicket and get off the dime as I hate it when there's a spanner in the works or when someone has a screw loose. It might be even worse if they're a nutter, but I can deal with someone that has done a runner even if he calls hisself Dunaruna . . .

Back to cars.

Over here my car is actually not a Jaguar it's a "Daimler Sovereign", the same car in the States is known as a Jaguar VDP.

I have never been able to work out if this is down to good old fashioned English snobery or somthing to do with language differences

A "Daimler", huh? I remember many years ago in the late 50's when Daimler had a little sports car, I was in the new car showroom, opened the hood, and there was a Chrysler Hemi in it! I don't know how they stuffed that in there  but, I wanted it immediately :D Forget about your Sunbeam tiger! but alas, I wasn't quite of driving age, nor did I have the money, but it was so cool!

Yeah, but it was the Americans who invented the car bra. :D

Sorry, pretty much those same lines from my favorite TV series (Home Improvement starring Tim Allen)

I used to be in a mom's club years ago...we had a mom from Texas, one from Alabama, one from Buffalo, NY, one from New Jersey, and one from England. Half the time we were trying to figure out each other's strange speech patterns! The cutest thing was the Brit's son, who had a pronounced British accent, overlaid with an Atlanta twang that was just adorable.

Re: American pronounciation

being a country boy from the hills of east Tennessee I would hate to hear what ya'll would say about the way I slaughter the english language. my daughter graduated from college last year, wants to be a writer and is in broadcasting, radio. I can't understand her when she comes in for a weekend.she sounds like she's from another country, at least not yankee accent. put us side by side and you couldn't tell we were related. I'm very proud of her and she has tried to correct me or change the way I talk but I told her to give it up, the ones I talk to know what I mean and talk the same way. when I drove a truck over the road for 14 years I would go in truckstop to eat and the waitress would ask me to just talk to them, didn't matter what just talk. they said they loved it. it's got me by for 48 years. proud of my Southern heritage and can't be offended, it's just who I am.

Bad idea.... really bad... There's 320 million of them and only 21 million of us.... Pick a fight you can win...

A very pragmatic Bloke, I say.:D I knew our cousins downunder had great heads on their shoulders.

Oh, and btw, congrats on your countryman's (Matt Mitcham) spectacular win. Now if you guys could only learn how to spell Mitchum.:p
