I think I killed my 1100 outboard

Bought an older boat last month to use for fishing (didn't take it right to the shop for a tune-up like I should have) the engine is a Mercury 1100 which ran fine but didn't like to idle at slow speed. Anyway I have been using it for the last month and it ran great, yesterday after trailering it I noticed some light smoke coming from the top of the engine which it has never done before, I thought it odd so when I got home I hooked it up to the hose and it would not start. Took it to the shop today and a quick diagnosis is that the water pump probably went out and I burned up the motor. The boat does not have a temp. guage or alarm so I did not know it was getting hot. You would think that the boat would have ran different or shut down but it ran just fine back to the marina. Does it sound like it's shot? I woun't know for sure until the mechanic gets in and really looks at it.

Try a different shop, those old engines didn't usually die that easily. The shop should have had more info for you if the would have really checked it out properly.

Well, it was just a quickie diagnosis, he won't be able to really get into it until next week. I am really hoping that it's not dead. Seemed to run just fine all day so I am hoping for the best.

My 115 did the same thing the day before yesterday.....killed the bottom end cap bearing, and ate the bottom of the crankshaft up pretty bad. It really sucks, I know EXACTLY how you feel
