I'm trying to figure out what my boat and trailer weighs. There are local weigh stations here for trucks, landfills etc. Question is, how will I know what my tounge weight will be if I drive up onto one of these stations? Don't they weigh the truck too. I'm guessing it's done per axle. but How do I figure the tongue weight.

Boat is a 24 FT Sundancer, It's a tad too heavy for my bathroom scale.

thanks..

Re: Trailer Weight

I measure my tongue weight with a set of good quality "doctors office" scales. Most of them go up to 400-500#. Just place the jack foot/wheel on the scale and unhook the trailer then adjust the scales to find the weight.

Trailer jack on the scale set at your tow height.

If you have a jack that is mounted further back, you may want to try to measure tongue weight at the coupler instead. If the jack is, say 2 feet back I would think that could skew your findings.

Re: Trailer Weight

If you go to Cat Scales, it is easy to get the tongue weight and total weight at the same time. They generally weigh across multiple plates then add the plates for a total. At my local Cat Scale, I simply park with my axle on one plate and my trailer jack on another. When I get my printout, it gives the individual plate weights and a total. It is pretty obvious which one is the tongue weight. You can find Cat scales here:

Do I weigh with full fuel or close to empty?

Depends on what you want to know. I weighed mine with full fuel and every bit of junk that I normally take... I like to have the worst case scenario covered.

Go at a time they are not busy. Go to the fuel desk and tell them what you are going to do. Do as he states above. You will get the weight of the tongue, the axel(s), and the gross weight of the trailer.

Re: Trailer Weight

Yup, I'll head for a cat scale about 32 miles west of me. Tuning up my power package now to dunk and give it a run hopefully this week sometime. Before I reload her, I need to replace the bunk brackets.

The brackets are rusted and slanting to the outside. I have an aluminum trailer but they put on galvanized brackets. Makes no sense. There is a local trailer shop that has aluminum bracket for 25 bucks a pair I'll pick up tomorrow.

I'll post back with results on the weight.

thanks for the replies..
