Can anyone help I'm trying to set the timing on my 1985 115hp Evinrude. The Manual says to go by the sticker on the engine. Problem is there's no sticker on the engine????? If anybody has a 1985 evinrude 115 and can look at his motor or a tech that has access to this info please let me know. Thanks for your help!

That year's service manual should have the timing information. As a point of reference, the 86 manual states 28 degrees plus or minus one. You need to follow the procedure specified in the manual. If you haven't set the timing pointer, you may want to do that first.

Definately set the pointer first. Even if it's never been moved.

28* is about as high as I'd go on todays fuel. You may discover that there's little or no difference between 26 and 28. A lot depends on your set up.

We generally set the initial timing and then check it under a load. We'll start at 24* and test run the boat. Then go to 26* and test again. Usually we see a little improvement. Then we'll go to 28* and test run again. If we see an improvement we leave it there and we're done. If there's no improvement from 26 we'll go back to 26 or 27. We don't go over 28*.

This is all assuming the motor is stock. The heads have not been cut, the jetting is stock, the top rpms are right and there are no exhaust modifications.
