I just bought 1988 ranger with 150 hp pro v Yamaha two stroke. I am not familiar with two stroke engines other than some small lawn equipment. I have always mixed 50:1 for them. Reading the Clyver manual looks like these Yamaha engines require 100:1 ratio. Could that be right?

No - DJ is correct. And take that Clymer manual and use it for kindling - they are at times really useless. ( like this time )

Absolutely as DJ !!!
50 to 1 and TCW-3 rated 2 stroke oil.
What type of TCW-3 is a whole other subject. Read some threads on the subject and decide for yourself !!!!

Re: oil fuel ratio for 88' 150 pro v

I just checked the Yamaha web site and it does say that 25 hp and bigger engines use 100:1 ratio. They even sell something called Ratio Rite a measuring cup, I guess. Could somebody elaborate as to the pros and cons of 50:1 and 100:1. I did run the boat with 50:1 and seemed like it was smoking a lot but I really don't know what normal is.
Thank you guys in advance for your help.

OB makers have been back and forth on the ratio business.

The issue with 100:1 is that it is believed that the 100:1 ratio does not leave enough residue to protect bearings/cranks when the engine is not being used.

OB makers have found that the engines will survive on 100:1 if the engine is run constantly and I mean constantly. However, that's not how 95% of the engines are used.

You ABSOLUTELY are NOT harming the engine by using 50:1. You assume some risk at 100:1. Don't risk it.

This all leads to other questions, regarding maintenance.

Yamaha makes an excellent ring free additive that I would recommend using on a regular basis.

As far as the oil goes, I lean toward the OEM stuff simply because I don't use enough of it to make it worthwhile shopping around. But, that's just me.

Welcome to iboats
I stand to be corrected but I thought 50 to 1 was the leanest mix.
Im heard from this site that 100 to 1 was used and recommended for a while but was changed back to 50 to 1.
