Re: fitting a fuel gauge

Check the top of the fuel tank carefully for a sending unit. If the tank has one, great. If not, you need to determine if one can be added. If so, there would be circular metal plate held in place with a about five or six screws. Remove the plate and install a sender. There are two connections for the sender. The center connection "S" (sender) connects to the "S" terminal on the gauge. The shell of the sender connects to ground (Battery Negative). Up front, the gauge has an "I" (ignition) terminal that must have +12 volts connected to it when the key is in the ON/RUN position. The other terminal is ground (again battery negative). The sending unit must be selected based on the depth of the tank. If the tank does not have a port for addition of a sender I would not recommend attempting to add one as the plastic material is not thick enough to safely secure the sender and leakage may occur, especially when the tank is full.

Re: fitting a fuel gauge

thanks for replying 'silvertip'.each fuel tank has at one end a screwcap for filling and at the other end a cap which tells me how much fuel is in the tank.this is where the fuel hose connects.the tanks are made by quicksilver.i'm not sure what the 'sender' looks like.
