Grinding While Goining Into Gear Merc 470

back again guys, just some advice. When i put the boat in gear she grinds then engages. So i replaced the shift cables both of them. then I replaced the control. still does it. so then i play with the adjustments for hours and it either goes in one gear perfect and grinds in the other. I assuming it can be the peice that the cable connects to in the gimbal housing. its a metal peice with a notch for the shaft to the drive. it has alot of play. i dont wanna blow the drive. its been doin this for 3 years now. im just trying to slowly rebuild my boat.

How are you shifting it?

If you are shifting it slow-STOP.

The drive is an outboard drive. Shift it QUICK and decisive.

keep going "slow" and you'll pay.

thanks i know that the longer it grinds the worse it is. im just trying to find the prob

Did you use OEM cables? If good quality new cables didn't fix it, and proper adjustment didn't fix it, I'd be inclined to guess that it's something internal? Clutch dogs maybe?

Hope not.

How's your shift plate? Anything loose on it?

its a metal peice with a notch for the shaft to the drive. it has alot of play.

another thing to look at is this.....

They all sorta grind when out of the water..... so don't be shifting in your driveway trying to find a problem.

What are your IN WATER in neutral idle rpms???

when im in the water it does it. not on land. i purchased last year the new shift plate, cables,and controller. they say my drive is one of the best. pre alpha. i found out that this boat sat for 15 years. how do i put pics of the boat on this reply it wont let copy and paste them?

Also the shift switch works but she stalls alot from fwd to net or rev to net. seems like it doesnt come out of gear fast enough
