Water resistant connector / plug

I have a 6hp 4 stroke 2004 Mercury kicker on the back of my fishing boat. It has a charging kit installed (2 amp I think) which runs from the motor (hard wired) to one of my batteries, and I also have a remote throttle control (Trollmaster) wired from my boat to the kicker. So combined there are 5 electrical wires running to and from the 6 hp kicker. As a result, it's sort of a permanent mount. I'm not sure of the gauge of the wires but I'm guessing they're all probably around 16 - 20 awg.

I'd like to be able to easily remove the motor and store it when I'm not using it for the day. What I'm wondering is if I can cut the wires and if there's some type of a water resistant plug or system of connectors I could use between that motor and the boat.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Any auto store can fix you up with with the male and female connectors. Or you can go to any auto salvage yard and for about 5 bucks they will let you cut out any good quality connectors from any car.

Exactly what I was going to recommend. I was thinking more along the lines of using a male and female trailer plug, that way it's only one connector.

The only problem is that trailer plugs are not water proof which I thought was one of your requirements. I'm most familiar with GM cars but they have connectors with as many as six terminals and they are waterproof.

I used these folks, deutschconnector.com, for all the connectors to add T&T to my 70hp as I needed to match the connectors already on a T&T cable I purchased on Ebay. Great folks and fast shipping. Connectors are watertight, easy to assemble, and can be disassembled easily as well in case you insert a wire into the wrong hole lets say. No never happens. Do need a MOLEX connector style crimping tool though, which I already had, but can also be purchased from them. Connectors come with all the parts needed. Just pick the size & type of the pins and sockets.

You will find these connectors being used on late model J&E motors, hence those that were already on the T&T cable I purchased.

Good Luck,

True. I was thinking about using the 4-flat connectors tho. You would have to suse two and I would alternate the ends so you can't get them confused. 4 Flat are water tight.

Re: Water resistant connector / plug

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

I spoke with the manufacturer of the Trollmaster and he was hesitant about me cutting the wires as they're encased in a shielded cable. He mentioned that there's likely a connector for those wires under the hood of my 6hp motor. He was correct. Also, turns out there were connectors for the charging kit wires, also located under the hood of the motor. I'll just pull the wires apart, feed them through the small hole of my motor and I can take it off without cutting anything. I can live with the small hassle of having to pull the hood off the motor so I can remove it.
