Re: year for 6 cyl 90hp

That serial number is not showing as a 90 hp. It is showing as a 6 cylinder in 1977. 6cylinder 90s didn't start until 1978... So, what does this mean? Several possibilities.

1. It's not a 90, it's a 115 or even (though unlikely) a 150.
2. If you have read the serial number from the transom bracket, then it could be a transom bracket from a different engine. Check the top of the engine block for a stamped serial number...
3. You transcribed the number incorrectly... Please re-check.......

Rainbro, Brown Band motors were newer than 1976. The 1976 model would have had Blue band with red accents. Either your cowling is newer than the motor, or the transom clamp has been changed. You could also have a "FrankenMerc". There is a part number on the block. You can look it up at Crowleymarine.com and see if it belongs to a '76 or newer motor. I never could find a serial number on the block, but it may be there for all I know.

Re: year for 6 cyl 90hp

Does the motor have a distributor with one ign coil (CDI), or does it have a big metal plate on the Stbd side with 6 coils and 2 switchboxes etc bolted to it (ADI)?

Is the power trim pump mounted inside the boat with (4) hoses going to (2) hydraulic cylinders, one on either side of the transom bracket, or is it all built into the transom bracket (newer-style)?

That at least might help narrow it down to a decade or so!.........ed

"frankenmerc",lmao ha, ha, I think it may be, The controls are definitely early 70s,(blue band with separate fast idle control, with no trim control)the ignition has a distibutor.the trim cylinders are mounted on the transom outside the boat with no hoses or pump found.I am guessing it has been bastardized. Its not my motor. Its a buddy who just wanted to get out on the water this summer , cheap.Any idea of the decade of possible production would be helpful ,LOL.

Re: year for 6 cyl 90hp

Well, given the disparity in serial #'s, most likely it's a '77 or '78. Earlier would be perhaps a 115 instead of a 90, with switched cowlings.

But far as parts go, very little diff between the motors except for some of the innards.

I suppose you could pull the most accessible main jet plug (the brass hex-headed plug at the bottom front of each carb), and if you've got good eyes see if you can make out the jet size. If it's .070 it's a 90HP and .072, a 115.

FrankenMerc Indeed!!! Either way it probably doesn't care much and will run regardless of its true identity!

Cheers.........ed

Ok - That could be a '76, with a brown cowling. Cowlings fade, so maybe he got a newer one. You should look on the crowleymarine.com site and see if the part Num of the block is a 90HP, 115HP or 150HP. There are sutble differences between the three models.
