It appears that the steering wheel on my boat is upside down so that the spokes which should be facing down for straight ahead steering are facing up. I need to rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees. Has anyone ever done this and is it difficult to do?

no,its not hard just get a steering wheel puller,a little WD40 on the center splines.
just make sure your out drive is straight when you go to put it back on.

Oh no! You must be operating a boat meant for Australia (down under) and it is the the wrong hemisphere!!!! (I could not resist!)

Usually a wheel puller will pull the wheel and you might be able to reset it..... or the entire mechanism might have to be flipped.

My wheel is keyed so it only goes on 1 way. I agree that perhaps the whole mechanism might be rotated 180.

Re: upside down steering wheel

On some systems you have to remove the cable from the helm, position the steering wheel at some goofy angle, and then reinstall the cable. The wheel turns as the cable is removed and installed. If you do it right, you will be close and the rest can be adjusted at the steering link at the motor. If you have a Teleflex system, they have installation instructions online that will tell you how to do it.

Is your steering rack and pinion or drum?

I'm not sure, but I fixed it with little difficulty. There was a 3/4 inch nut in the center. I removed the lock nut, pulled the wheel off, and put it back after rotating it 180 degrees. I can't imagine how it didn't bother the previous owner or how it left the factory that way. Job done. Thanks for all the help.
