Takes forever to get rpms up. I'm missing about 1,000 on the top end too.

Heres the story. I used to be able to floor the throttle and it would just take right off full rpms and hit around 40mph no problem. Now all of a sudden I floor it and it slowly (very slowly) goes from idle up to 4,000rpms. It takes like 30 seconds at least to get up to 4k. It then stops at 4k and won't make it to 5k like it used to. Any ideas? It started off as a surging problem now its all gone to h*ll. I did take the flame arrestor off and noticed the upper butterfly flap "thing" was off. The electronic part outside of the carb that hooks up to the shaft. What is that anyways. I put it back on and still same problem.

You saying that your choke butterfly wasn't there? I'm confused. If your carb is falling apart, it's probably about time to considering doing a carb rebuild. It's likely that the two problems are related.

Anyway, some other things to check, Timing, fuel delivery (how new is the water/separator? How's the filter on the carb? How's the fuel pickup? Fuel pump? Anti Siphon? When was the last tune-up?

Don S. has a good list of things to check for loss of power. I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to link you to it.

i would suggest you first to replace the fuel filter then a compressoin test and tell us the results and what make and model is your engine.
