A neighborhood friend who teaches told us her new method to keep control of her classes. The first day of school she gets their attention and then whips out HER OWN CELL PHONE. Then she says "See this ? Its mine and I dont try to save minutes, If you disrupt my class you and I will go out into the hall right then and with this cell phone we are going to call your mama, your papa, your aunt, grandmama WHOEVER and we will talk about your problem in my class. yuk yuk She said it seems to work but she is sure it will be tested. You know callin mama at work can lead to some "punishment" from the mama...Most of the time the vet teachers can never be out smarted by students.

Re: Control of class

She needs to follow that by handing out a paper for them to fill out asking for Telephone #s for all the parents and grandparents :)

Re: Control of class

I usually find that the trouble makers in class are that way because they are not participating in class. That is to say that they are not involved so I try to get as many people involved as possible. The ones that I aim for first are the popular ones or the ones that seem to be the leaders in the class.

All students MUST furnish a contact number to be kept on record when they first enter the school. As children law requires them to have the name and number for their contact person. The parent cant complain if the teacher interrupts their job with a phone call because the misbehavior of the child is doing that to the teachers job first.

Shouldn't that be the responsibility of the Principal to call?

I hated going to school in the same district that my mom taught........She knew the things I did before I even got home.......That was a bummer cuz she always got home before my bus did. Then my dad knew what went on even before I got home.

My mom was an old school. She would grab the bad kid by the ear lobe and walk them to the office,,,,,,,,followed by a whacking noise that could be heard throughout the school. She retired before those days ended...........SS

If she was an "Old School" teacher she knew the things you did before you did them

The principal can and often does call parents but she delegates doing it the first 2 or 3 times to the teacher. In the old days all of the behavior problems were dealt with 100% by the principal but things have changed.Another new method of dealing with students who cause problems and wont pay attention is to require the student to stand during the class..They really hate that but having a chair to sit goes along with being an active member of the class..You see its hard to fall asleep standing up.

That USED to be done in the prison. Some of us got in major doo-doo and ended up seeing a federal judge behind it. Corporal punishment is outlawed for prisoners but is ok for the kids. What a neat world we live in huh.

Nothing wrong with having a student stand up if the only other alternative is to give him a chair and let him sleep/snore etc. Students MUST meet the minimum requirements for the class . Teachers use what is most effective for them to teach the program, its their job. I know another teacher who tells them that if they are certain they dont want to take the class and wont ask to transfer to another she offers a section of seats set apart from the students who want to learn just for the ones that want to sleep. You like that better? lol One class only has seats placed in front of the computers. Surely a kid who is there to play cant be trusted to set in front of a computer. He will just play more and maybe break the computer, so he has to stand up cause its against the rules to let them lay on the floor. gez.

Lord knows we wouldn't want to punish the prisoners and make them feel bad about themselves you know. After all it's our fault they did it in the first place.

I like that cat in Ariz or Tx that makes the county pris sleep in tents and wear pink.

Re: Control of class

The problem with calling parents is that many children simply have none. Many of my students live with their grandmother or aunt who is always working and never home. Mom is missing and dad is in prison. They are basically raising themselves. They don?t take kindly to adults telling them how it is. On the other hand, I love it when I contact a stern parent and I can hear the kid in the background saying, "Noooo wait, but but but!

The small engine repair class I?m teaching is going quite well. Anyone know where I can obtain junk, scrap engines for dissection purposes?

Thanks

Re: Control of class

I have two comments.
1 - I am a recovering Catholic. Those of you who were sentenced to Parochial schools knows what this means.
2 - Don't get me started about public schools. They should be called political schools.
I could start my own forum about public schools, little of it good.

Re: Control of class

When, where, and how did youngsters lose respect for elders?
In my youth (D.O.B. 1949) any adult had the right to smack my behind for any infraction. Teachers, Aunts,Uncles, Neighbors, etc.

It didn't take me long to learn respect and obey the rules of the world as it existed then.

My parents friends were addressed as Mister or Mrs. Jones. Not Bob and Ruth. An "adult" male was addressed as Sir and a female as Mrs.

I was a result of the military backround most parents of the 50's just experienced.

If I got smacked at school, I'd be smacked again at home after the teacher talked to my parents.
As I look back at it, it was never child abuse or a severe whipping. It was an attempt at modifying my actions and it worked.

I was not a slow learner. Once or maybe twice was all it took at the age of younger than 12 to learn society's rules.

I know I will open myself to severe criticism, but my belief is that the down fall started with the Supreme Court ruling of Brown VS the State of Arkansas.

Read into that what you wish.

That's EXACTLY how I feel about it... Got told one time in a mall (15 years ago) that I couldn't "abuse" (read smack on the rear...) my child. Told the lady to mind her own business and moved on. Was probably lucky she didn't call the cops on me...

The world has definitely changed, and not for the better...
