I am continously browsing the boats section in Craigslist and sometimes Kijiji as well to see what people are selling. I already have 3 boats and don't need another. But if a great deal comes along, that is a different story. Well I found a great deal on a 2002 Searay, one of those deals that sound too good to be true. I sent the guy an e-mail and this is the response. I live in Vancouver B.C.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest regarding my item ( 2002 Sea Ray 190 Sundeck ). Here are the details that you have to know about this deal. This boat is equipped with the Mercury 5.0 Liter EFI V8 fuel injected engine with 240 horsepower and it has only 439 original hours on it. The boat comes with a Tandem Axel trailer with brakes, winch and wheel jack. It also has power steering, blower, hydraulic trim, horn and navigational lighting. The boat is presenting in very good condition, never involved in accidents, no need for additional repairs. It has always been garage kept. It comes with all the documents needed for registration, it has a clear title and it can be anytime registered into your name without a problem.

The price I want to obtain for it is C $4,200 and if you agree with it we can start to complete the transaction. I realize that is a cheap price for such a product but my special situation makes me do things that I wouldn't do in normal circumstances. Right now I am located in England, Europe. I am trying to make a new life here because my wife wants to be closer to her family. I am selling it only because I need some money urgently.

The boat will be shipped from Quebec, Canada and it will take no more than 5 days to arrive at your door. The shipping fees to your location will be supported by both of us, so the final price that you will have to pay for the unit is C $4,700.

The transaction will be supervised by Kijiji for our own protection.Your funds will be insured by them until you will receive and inspect the boat and I will be sure that I will receive the payment.
If you wish to proceed, please provide me your details (full name and shipping address) so I can start the transaction. They will contact you right after, with all the instructions to follow. Please email me back and let me know what your intentions are. I will appreciate a fast answer from you.

Thank you!
Jason

Sounds like a scam to me. I told the guy that I will be in Quebec next week and would like to take a look at it. See what he says. I thought of playing along with him for a bit, to learn more about the scam, but why bothere.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Kijiji is ebay's version of Craigslist, not as good though. Same idea. I am sure the same scams happen on Craigslist as well. Just a heads up.

Have a great day,

Would you risk your $$ and send him $4700??? This is a fairly common type scam. But you are right there is a slight possibility that it is legit, however it is very slight.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Sounds like it will only cost you $4700 to meet the host of Dateline. When you do, he can explain to you that your money is gone. Even if he agrees to meet you, beware! Seems this seller is up to something.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Alot of scams out there. I have a boat for sale on CL and get scam e-mails all the time, pretty easy to spot, most people dont say "ill wil send you a check and arange shipment" without talking to you about the item being sold or seeing it. E-bay has alot of scams as well, just have to be cautious.

Buying "Sight Unseen" is risky. If I can't touch it, smell it, hear it, and taste it,,,,,,,I won't even think about a purchase. Otherwise, you get what you pay for.........SS

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Why do people always wait until they are out of the country to sell their boat? LOL!

The whole ad reads like the typical scam sale. Can't they get better writers?

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Here is his reply. So even though I am in Quebec I will not be able to see the boat because the freight company will not let me.

Rob, I am very glad because you are still interested and I assure that you will not be sorry. I want to let you know that the boat is already at the shipping company. I tried to explain them that you want to see it, but they told me that I must be there in person otherwise you will have no entry. I hope you will understand the situation so we can go further with this deal.

I want to assure you that the boat is presenting in very good condition, just like you can see it in the pictures and is ready for the water. More than that, your money will be insured and in case that something will go wrong you will receive a full refund, but I assure you that is not the case.

If you are still interested, please email me back with your full name and the address where you want the boat to be shipped so I can start the transaction through Kijiji and they will contact you with more details and instructions. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks!
Jason

Is there anyone out there that does not think this is a scam??

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

Hey, Rob tell him that you want your friend in Florida to look the boat over for you. The $500 transportation fee should be sufficient don't ya think. That way when I get it I can relist it for a normal price of $12,500. and we can split the profit!!

That should help to get this whole thing a little more interesting. :p

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

This is a variation of the car scam common on Craigslist, advertise a car at a price that is almost too good to be true. When you bite the owner just happens to be out of the country, so please send your money here and we'll arrange for you to get the car. Not unlike some of the eBay scams involving bogus 2nd Chance offers to unsuccessful bidders including bidders on outboards.

You can also suggest that your brother the cop lives in Quebec, he's willing to run by the shipper and take a look at the boat for you, and you doubt they'd have a problem letting your brother in just to take a look....see if you get a response. :D

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

100% absolutely a scam. Just like everyone else said. I've found that if the seller doesn't include their phone number on the ad and it's a too-good-to-be-true price, I don't even waste my time looking at the ad anymore. Who says "my item" about their boat, anyway?
What a load of crap. Seems like there would be a way to catch these scammers, but they make sure noone ever sees them in person.
And kijiji doesn't "insure" someone's payment? I've never heard of such a thing! I'll bet if you asked him what the license plate number was on the trailer and what the boat's registration number was, he wouldn't be able to tell you because he just made up the whole thing and stole the pictures and boat description off someone else's ad off the net.

Re: Boat Buyers Beware!!!

The scam is not for the price of the boat. The boat that doesn't exist is just bait. The scam is the shipping charge. This is how all these large item scams from other countries work. The seller will ask you to forward your share of the shipping charge as a show of good faith. You will never see this money again. When the seller receives your shipping money he knows he has a fish on the hook. His next email will explain to you that there has been an additional fee levied by the government. Some sort of tax or export fee that wasn't previously disclosed. He will ask you to pay all or half. This will go on till your broke or wiser.

He won't get a cent from me, but I am interested in how his scam works. Just sent him an e-mail to ask him how the transaction will work. Will post the reply if I get one.

Have a great day,

It is funny just to lead him on....waste his time for wasting so many others....And Rob I think you are on the right track. By messing with him a little bit you are learning more about how the scams work.... It just allows you to be more aware of what is goin on.
