"drill bit extractor"

Hehe! We'll hope it doesn't come to that :) !

You'll know a screw extractor because it will be tapered and have flutes or ridges that twist in the opposite direction from regular threads. This is so it threads itself in a counterclockwise direction into the hole that you drilled in the bolt and turns the broken screw out. You just need to pick the proper size for the hole that you drill. If you drill the hole in the screw too big then the extractor will spread what's left of the screw and lock it in place. If the hole is too small then the extractor that you have to use is too small to take the torque. It's a delicate balance. You just have to be sure that you don't break one off in the bolt. Because as JBJ mentioned above it's "game over" then! Time for a trip to the machine shop.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

i tried cutting a little hole in the thing today in which i could fit my screwdriver in. well... it didnt work. i got it out a little and its like. 00000000000354353456q34634 from me acaully getting a vice grip on it to grab it. im so close but i cant get it out any further cause the hole i made stripped. im thinking about buying a drill extractor but r there any other ideas fro my to get this thing out? im very frustrated about this motor first it was filling the gear oil now the flywheel oh and the shift rod too

But look how much you're learning about old outboards! And who knows it might someday save someone else from making the same mistake.

If you had a sharp pick or punch you might be able to take a hammer and carefully tap it around in a counterclockwise direction until you can get a grip on it. You don't want to booger up the aluminum around the bolt or it will just make it harder to get out. Left handed drill bit and then an easy-out (screw extractor) is still your best bet. Don't give up! Good luck!

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

borrowed a drill from a neighbor today.

ok i smoothed the bolt out with a number 7 drill bit i think this is 1/4" after i could tell where the center of the bolt was then i re measured the whole. i kind stripped a little of the hole away. then i took the part i drilled i put a 1/8" number 37 i think or 38 drill number. and drill it directly in the center. i 2moro am going to buy a drill bit extractor and see how it goes

Keeping our fingers crossed here!

Remember, take your time. And beware of wandering drill bits (slides off the relatively hard bolt and into the softer aluminum). A sharp bit is your best defense against wandering. Good luck!

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

i got the flywheel off!!!!!!!!

well i took one of the coils off and found like a purple goo under it and it looked liked it was kind melted. took it off from the spark wire and it was kinda melted there too. ok here where i stand i didnt do anything else the rest of the day not wanted to screw anything else up.

condensers look easy to replace. point r a bit complicated since u have to get them right there. my points were way out of adjustment ill tell u this right now wayyyy out fo adjustment. one of them looked like it was alll the way closed.

im going to reread jb jenningings thread and tuesday or sometime i have to replace those parts and really clean up under there losts of shard of metal that r sticking like a magnet to the crankshaft.

how am i going to replace the spark plug wires im still not sure what to look for so 6feet of 4mm spark plug wire that r copper core but what about the way it connected to the coil and spark plug how am i going to do that?

whats a link and sync proccess.? ive been reading about this lately. i think my motor might need one. how do u do it? how do u take offt the plate that holds the coils and points etc. looks like this is the only way to replace the spark plug wires

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

one set of points will be closed when the other set is open. There should be marked on the cam that works the points the word top. Set the points facing the word top to .020 when the top is lined up with those points. The other set will be closed. turn the crank 180 degrees and the set you just set will be closed and the other will be open. You will need to pull the magneto plate to replace the wires. After you pull the plate you will see how to run the wire just like you took them off.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

7mm wire will work fine. You can buy a cheap copper core wire set from an auto parts store and use those, but they need to be copper core. The coils just got old and started leaking just like me.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

Did you find the four screws that hold the mag plate on? Two go through the coil heels and the other two are down next to the points. They form a rectangular pattern. Make note of how the spark plug wires and the kill button wires are routed before you take it off. Once you get it off you'll need to remove all the stuff bolted on underneath. Take a picture of it if you can or take careful notes on how it all fits under there. You'll have the cam for the throttle, then the shift lockout stop piece and then the spark plug wire keeper. Note that the cam has a slotted hole on one end. This is where the link-n-synch adjustment is made.

Now on the points, yes they are a little complicated. But mostly it's just that there are some tiny parts in there. You have the little clip that goes on the points pivot pin and then the clip that holds the spring to the little tab. There will be a felt pad included with both point sets but you'll only need one. It fits under the clip thats under an end of one of the coil heels. The ones that come with Sierra points seem awfully large to me. I wound up cutting almost a quarter inch off of the end of mine. If you have one of the spring loaded style cams (i.o.w. it pops up away from the points rubbing blocks when you take the flywheel off) then your points setting procedure should be a little different. In that case you'll want to close the points adjustment all the way so that the cam can be pushed down when the flywheel is installed. Rotate the crankshaft so that the high point of the cam (keyway) is midway between the two points rubbing blocks. That way the cam won't hit the points rubbing blocks.

So have you found yourself a feeler gauge and a torque wrench yet? You'll need those to finish the job.

As far as the stripped holes. I can't imagine them being too bad since you were able to get the flywheel off with them. Just be sure to get all of the metal shavings out of there. then you'll be fine. Good luck!
