Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

well i just talked to dave and he said i really didnt need a filter in it. cause i replaced the fuel and air lines and cause im cleaning the tank fo rust and i ahve to fuel pick up line screen still. he said that if it hasnt given me any problems not it should be fine. he siad that if the carb continuasly floods and the paricles int he fuel r making the needle stick open and flood then i will need one. but ill take a look at the bowl and see if theres a screw hole he said there for the filter and what type. i would a in line filer but the fact that i already cut my hoses. what do u think?

Interesting! I looked on laingsoutboards.com and they only list the round ceramic fuel filter for the 10 horse up to '58. They don't show a fuel filter again until '62. OMC sure did some crazy stuff back in the day! "We don't need no stinking fuel filter!" Then four years later they go, well maybe we do need a fuel filter after all!

I'll look tonight and see if Sierra shows the round ceramic filter. If there's no place for the stud that holds the filter in I guess I wouldn't worry about it either.

My 1962 10 hp sportwin has a cylinder shaped fuel filter inside the glass sediment bowl. Does that thing ever need to be cleaned or replaced?

My 1957 7.5 hp fleetwin does not have a fuel filter that I can see in the glass sediment bowl. I need to look into whether that should have one or not. I'm working on rebuilding the carburator on that motor right now.

Well, I'm going to be replacing them on both of mine this winter. Just because there's no practical way to test them and they aren't that much money.

Hmmm, does your parts catalog show one? My 56 10 horse Johnson has one and the parts catalog shows it. And I was under the impression that the 7.5s were basically the same. I'd say the parts catalog is the only way to know for sure.

ok well i put evyrthing together and did evyrthing and well my gas tank was wrong at first. the thing wouldnt prime took it apart again turns out to be my diapram was on backwards and i fixed that. it started primer fuel. then i started the motor on 4-5 pulls yet the needle valves were 1 turn out on high and 1 1/2 on low. i didnt adjusted them cause i didnt have time. im gonna let it sit till saturday when me and my mom and buddy r gonna be using it and ill will adjust it then. it idle down pretty nicely but my cowl like it isnt on there good. the clamp where the air silencer is isnt working. it will keep it down but vibrates and is noisy a lot when at idle. so i think im gonna get some rope and tie it aorund the cowl to keep it down maybe it will help:D

Well, I have a 1956 parts catalog for the 7.5 hp, and it does show a fuel filter. But, I don't have a 1957 parts catalog. I'll take a look at it when I rebuild the carburator and see if there looks like a fuel filter is supposed to be there.

Where do you purchase the replacement filters?

Laingsoutboards.com sells them. 303133 round ceramic filter is the one mine shows for the '56 10 horse. They sell the float too 396514

Good news, although I feel kind of dumb! LOL I found the fuel filter! It was actually inside the glass bowl, right where it should have been. I just somehow overlooked it. Here is a picture of it (the carburator is upsidedown):

That gear looking thing on the right laying beside the carburator is the filter nut. It screws onto the rod that comes down through the middle of the fuel filter and holds the fuel filter in place.

If you're not interested then don't read it. It's really very simple.

Hehe, well that is good news. One mystery solved :) .

Coolguy, I'm thinking the only sure way to tell if yours had a fuel filter is to look at the parts catalog for that engine. It kind of sounds like it didn't. But then again if you have the gear shaped nut inside the sediment bowl then maybe......
