I'm going to a zoning hearing tommorrow concerning a funeral home that wants to add a crematorium. This is near some property that I own ,is well within the city limits and is surrounded by other businesses. I have no experience with them and don't really know what position to take. I've worked in a power plant and know that the draft fans carry a lot of burned particulate out into the atmosphere. This has been an objection from some people who picture burned bodies sifting down all over the place. Do any of you guys have any experience with this? What position should I take?

You should be asking the zoning board to acquire data on the burn unit, height, noise level, particulate discharge size and quantity, hours of operation, odors, etc.

Thanks, roscoe. I knew there would be someone who knew something about it. I hadn't seen your reply before I went to the meeting this morning, but fortunately, there were people there who asked for this same information.

I agree there should be some type of operation permit that will be given and signed once installed.

I also believe that they require scrubber units on there exhaust stacks, this veries per state, but i cant imagine them wanting floaties in the air around the area(s). I do know that they use fragrances when "in operation" and they try to respect the people and save as much as they can. im not an expert, but im Involved with alot of environmental issues in my area and i've had freinds who have worked in these establishments.

If you could get there permit, it would lay out everything in black and white for you.

hope this helped

Re: Crematoriums

I can't really speak on what the requirements of a creamatorium are but what I do know is.......a funeral home here in Canton installed a creamatorium in their facility. Its next door to my church and one block off the town square. Its also next door to two residences. One residence is behind the facility and one to the south side. I do know this unit has been used because of family members and friends having used that service. I drive by the funeral home every day and have never ever seen any form of smoke, smell or ash particals coming from the vent iin the roof of the building where its located. I dont know if thats because they only use it at night or why but theres never ever been a problem from it.
