Honda 225 Oil Change?

I went onto the local Honda dealership yesterday morning and told him I need the gaskets/seals to do a 20 hour service on oil and gear oil (also on my 15 Honda), all he sold me was the neoprene washers for the 15hp and "O" rings for the 225. When I drained the oil, I found an aluminum washer like the Honda car engines have. I did not want to make another trip to town, so, I just reused the old one. Yes?No? Do you need to change the aluminum washer every time? My next recommended change will be at 100 hours, so would that be at 120 hours on the hour meter?
I know on Honda cars, they change the aluminum washer every time and I did have one of those in my shop, from my grandaughter's old Honda, but it was way too big. I did run the motor and checked for leaks, all was OK.
I asked the dealer about flushing with the hose connector on the engine and he said he perfers to use the muffs as he thinks you get a better flush? Yes/no?
Also, I had to use a hand impact type device to get the screws loose on the Honda 225, do they really need to be torqqued that tight, if so, how much/many #'s of torque is required? I will be using the boat again tomorrow so it would be nice to know. I have never lost a screw, etc after a tight hand tightening with a large screwdrive w/good flat tip.
Thanks to all for the right advise I will be getting(hopefully).

Re: Honda 225 Oil Change?

A Coast Guard Machinest Mate friend of mine, recently back from Honda 225 Training, answered simular questions for me.

The muffs issue is mute. The hose attachment for 8-10 minutes does an excellent job of flushing the motor. DO NOT RUN THE MOTOR. The hose flush is not designed for that. After 1000's of hours of use, hose flushing the motors has proven more than adequate for the USCG.

The impact wrench issue. Been there, done that. I have done 4 oil changes since new on my 225 (2006 model) no issues with a hand-tightening..

Crush washer....humm. I guess too much thinking can drive a guy nutts! I wouldn't sweat it. I probably would do a new washer every other chnage.

I have always used Mobil 1 for my oil....

Hope I helped.

Honda does'nt want to reccomend using synthetics because they really want you to maintain the service schedule and its hard to justify dumping 8 quarts of that expensive oil every 100 hours.Plus they do not offer a synthetic product of their own. That is how this debate has been presented to me by my DSM,several instuctors and tech line. It's your engine.Make your choices.

What type of Mobil-1 are you guy's talking about? Just gear oil or engine oil too? I want to run Mobil-1 in my boat next season but I am having a hard time finding it? If you could supply the number/letters on what type it is you use, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..........Irv964

Thanks for the links tmartin but the links show no Marine oils? I did a search and nothing? I only seen automotive and motorcycle oils. Are you guys just running Mobil-1 synthetic car oil and gear oil? Do you have any concerns knowing they are not engineered for marine applications? I love the stuff, don't get me wrong, I was just hoping they made a marine type oil that was designed for a marine type enviroment?...........Irv964

Re: Honda 225 Oil Change?

Honda just recommends regular 10W-30 automobile oil that has the energy starburst , API SG,SH,SJ or SL oil.

Ok, thanks. I will have to find out what most Merc owners are using? I was really hoping to run synthetic but I just read this post so now I have some concerns? I never heard of that before but I guess I had better look into it?...........Irv964

Re: Honda 225 Oil Change?

After reading the link above, all I can say is......GIVE ME A BREAK! Running too cool?
That's silly. T H E R M O S T A T !

Anyway, as a side note, that 80-90w gear oil says its " It provides excellent chemical and thermal stability at elevated bulk oil temperatures, good performance at low temperatures, and has demonstrated good rust protection resulting from water contamination and wet conditions."

I guess my $18,000 motor is doomed to failure.

Oh, and your welcome for the links. :)
