Its been years since Ive wired a house so i feel im outta the loop........My aunt and uncle are building an addition to their cottage and Im am wiring it up for them. Im getting close to the point of wiring up cable for the bedrooms and sitting/living room, and was wondering if I should run 1 wire from each bedroom, living room, to a central board that way each room essentially has its own homerun. Or should I jumper from 1 room to the next. This will be for a dish/ direct tv sat system. My fear with daisy chaining them from 1 room to the next is signal loss.

Back in my residential days we would loop the telephone wire from room to room to room...Is that still the norm? or should I take each phone jack to a main punchdown board located in the basement?

Thanks

I would give each room its own feed.

Home run everything and label all wires. Use real RJ45 jacks and plates with Cat6 if doing the network. RG-6 Quad shield with snap-seal connectors.

It's about the same cost using Cat5 cable for the telephone too.

As mentioned, home run for each room using RG-6 - NOT RG 59 - it may be cheaper but will be inferior.

If you are running cable for Satellite you must home run each line. Satellite with multiple receivers will not work daisy chained.

Actually, last time Directv came out to install at my new house, the tech showed me that now you can "split out" the signal from a single feed using a multiplexer. They are not cheap, but it will allow you to split your signal out at some point. I used a 1-2 multiplexer on one of my home runs to put satellite in a room that had no run from the patch panel in my house.

1 wire from the satt's LNBF to each Receiver that you are going to be using. i.e. 3 Receivers, 3 wires from the LNBF.

Daosy chain from there but that receiver will only run that channel regaurdless of which TV you are watching.

I run 5 TV's of of 3 Receivers in my house 3 TV's off of 2 receivers at my Cabin. All with UHF remotes. I am maxed out on the Receivers, here, with my service provider.. Even though I am running 8 TV's, I only have 5 Receivers.

If you are thinking of a Sat box with dual tuners then you will two satellite feeds to each box. It is not uncommon to run two or three coax to each location now when building new homes.

Home run every room. I installed direct TV for years. Any splitters inline will mess up the signal.
They make a Multi-Switch that has up to 8 outputs. The lines from the dish go to the Multi-switch,then your lines from each room connect to that.
The LNB on the dish operates at 13 and 18 volts from the receiver depending on what channel you are watching.Any cable type splitters will change the voltage and you will only get half the channels.
RG-6 cable only and compression fit connectors.
I was a service tech for them for about 6 years and found that it takes very little to cause problems.
I had a new house that a staple nicked the cable inside a wall and it screwed the whole system up.Exterior wall and had to cut sheet rock to fix it...:(

I tried it and it DID NOT WORK! 1 run per receiver. After doing that, I've taken care of my signal losses........SS

Definitely do home run on both sat and phone. RG 6 and Cat 5 or Cat 5E is needed. I would also adise to run two coax's to the living room and master bedroom as most of the Tivo type recievers require two lines.

Cat3 is good enough for phones. Use Cat5 or 5E for computer networking though.

True enough, but for how long? For maybe a penny more a foot now he can run wiring that will be there for a great many years with lots of extra legs if he ever needs them.

If I was running both phone and network I would probably run the same cat 5 or 6 for both only buying one type of cable. If it was only for phone I would buy and run the cat 3.

Re: Sat dish....

Multiplexers still have signal loss. 1 co-ax run per room and do not piggy back the signal to another TV. The signal loss is horrific. RG-6 connectors. I prefer the stainless screw on ends for the co-ax as they do not rust out and are infinitely reusable. There are at least 3 grades of RG-6 co-ax. Buy the best you can afford. The better the grade of it the more shielding, the better the quality.
