Number on the side of the drive is the drive serial number... Number on the centre decal at the top of the transom plate is the transom serial number....

When you replace the decal on the leg with a new one, cut the serial number off the old one and glue it in the right place on the new one....

Leg decals come as 3 separate decals...

Main set (inc transom decal) - part# 37-13682A86. Still available, supersedes to A90, ~$100
Rear decal - part# 37-43699. NLA
Engine designator - part# 37-13722A12. NLA

oh ok so my drive serial number is actually the "6886314" number then.

hey u do understand why I was wanting to know because EVERY siteo n the inter says 84 and up is an alpha one I mean every site says that....

BUT giving your knowledge I'll go with what you say :) thanks again

and with the decals whats the best way to keep the serial numbers..cut them and glue them on the new decal? that kinda seems half azz but i guess thats my only option huh?

i haven't seen these decals anywhere..any clue who has them?

All of the advise I post here comes from my Merc genuine library of service manuals and factory training handbooks. I tend not to trust sites, other than Merc.

As for a source of the decal... Start trying the non-dealer shops who keep old and NLA parts... Use the part numbers I gave you...

I thought the "MR" drive WAS the Alpha 1 drive. And that the R drive was the Pre-Alpha, or MC-1 drive...

they seem to kinda run the mr and alpha together I think it's the came casing and same internals except where the pump bolt is..maybe other minor changes.

Again, as Don said, this is NOT a Merc site... Look at the chart I posted (from a MERC service manual)... It's quite clear about a distinct between R, MR and Alpha One. And as it lists a starting serial number for the R, then there is a distinct line between MC-1 and R as way...

The chart that I got the R drive from stated that in 1984, the I-R drive was used. Even though all the info Chris posted indicated it was an MR, It bugged me that the info on my Mercruiser chart (out of a traning manual) was wrong.
Turns out it wasn't.
From the Merc program (like Chris has) you find this:

attachment.php

The highlighted sections show the SN ranges and the drives in that range of parts programs.

Now, under SN tab you can type in your SN as I did, this then gives you the model number.

attachment.php

With the model number you can then identify the year by going to the next tab. Guess what we find. You have an 85 outdrive, not the 84 as you posted. Then when you go to my chart from the training manual, you find it calls out MR where the 84 calls out an R.

My mistake was assuming you knew for a fact that it was an 84 and looking at that information only.

Don,

He said he had a 1984 boat... We all assumed that the engine in the boat was the same year... Our bad... That's why I always like to have the serial number (and have been abused more than once for asking for it).... Once I have a serial number you can tell me it was made on Mars, I don't care... I have the serial number and I can look up anything we need for that small piece of priceless information....

To all future Mercrusier posters:
I don't care what year your boat was made... Give me the serial number of the engine and/or drive.... Case in point... have a look at my signature... What would you say if I posted a question like this....

I have a 1972 Bertram with a V6 Mercruiser, and I'm having .... problem...

Mercrusier (or any other manufacturer) didn't make a V6 in 1972! Now, hopefully, you can see how this confusion is generated. Post serial numbers and make life easier for all of us.

End of a long thread (I hope!)

Chris................

P.S. Nice detective work Don :D

Now only one thing bugs me... How do you get the pictures you've uploaded to the post to come up as pictures in the post, not just as thumbnails?

I did post the serial number "The numbers on the LEFT side of the outdrive in the mercruiser decal reads "1.50R" the ratio..and also on the left side it reads "6886314""

anyway so in conclusion! lol the outdrive is a 1985 MR....and I'll look the engine serial number up but it may also be a 1985 year model..even though the boat per title and other ways shows it's an 1984.

ok thanks guys I appreciate it.

Don..ur tha man!

what site did u go to be able to plug the numbers in and it tell you what exactly you have? i wanna save that site to my favs..thats a nice little trick.

Oh, and I'm not...

It's not a site, it's a program on a CD from Mercury... Merc dealers are issued with them....
