I have a very old Evinrude Outboard Motor. The only information I can find is a single tag on the shaft with the numbers Evinrude Patents applied for and the numbers 4351-03207. It is in good shape but I can not get it to run. Does anyone have or know where I can get some information on this motor? It has a very small tank about a quart and the throttle is on the top and slides back and forth. if you can help me out.

EDIT: email addresses not allowed in open forum, for your protection. TD

Re: Evinrude Motor

Hello tgentle,
That's a 1940/41 1.8hp model. I believe it was referred to as the "Sportsman". Pretty simple motor. You need spark, compression and fuel delivery to make it run. Start with compression, then spark, then fuel. Those little guys never did have much compression, but if you can punch over 50 psi on a gauge, you're doing well.

Any idea of what the motor would be worth? I am going to try to get it to run and thanks for the tips.

Probably less than you hope. The main interest in outboards like that is among collectors, and there are lots of those out there. Worse, collectors of old outboards are notoriously stingy with their money.

If it was brand new, still in it's shipping box, it would be of great interest to those guys. In average running condition, not so much. Most of them have one, already.

I was just wondering on the value? I carried it to a mechanic and he is going to try to get it running and was asking me if I knew what it was worth? I have no idea to the value but was wanting to do some research on it. Thanks

Peter Hunn's "The Old Outboard Book" third edition gives it a value of $130 in good cosmetic and running condition.

130 is a top dollar I would think for one in very good condition paint and all. Problem is there is a lot of them out there. And as mentioned the collectors are the only ones that really have an interest and most of them have one if that is what they collect. The general public is afraid of old motors for their use at least in my area. The informed one's are not, but most are not informed.

I found out the ELTO that is stamped on the top plate is nothing to do with the Sportsman Model? Any one know what that ELTO stands for?

ELTO - Evinrude Light Twin Outboard. That's is the make. Same company, Different brand. You must have an "ELTO Ace" not an " Evinrude Sportsman".

Could be a hybrid, too. Never mind. Same value, either way. Aces are everywhere at the AOMCI shows. Everyone's first restoration motor. The new guys are always there running them and showing off the high polish they've gotten on them. 'Course they didn't look like that new. :D

Re: Evinrude Motor

It has Patent Pending and Evinrude ELTO stamped on the top where the crank rope is wrapped. My Father had this motor and passed it on to me. He traded a 12 gauge shot gun for the motor back in the early 50's.
