I have just aquired a 1960 Johnston 40 HP for a 15 foot fiberglass boat that i bought the summer previous. The steering mechanisim already installed in the boat is Rack Type. There is one bar that comes out by the motor that moves in and out. If i connect it directly to the motor, it just binds up...the motor doesnt travel its full range of movement. The motor seems to have been hooked up the pulley way before.

I was hoping some body could give some insight in to this situation. I am hoping there is a way that there is something i can use to convert the current steering system to work with the older style motor.

Please Help!

Re: Need help with Steering Hook Ups

I thank you for your reply. You have put me on the right track. I have the Transom plate that you speak of. What do i hook to the motor so i can get the movement that I need. The bar comes out linear and i need a half circle motion. I have been looking into link arms...am i on the right track? Or is there a simpler ball joint type of connection?

Please help

I have a mid 1970's 25 hp Evinrude (and some older evinrudes too) that i wanted to convert to the telescopic/mechanical steering system. as the pulley system on my boat is messed up.

From your description, it sounds like a similar issue...

I found that Teleflex & Uflex both have products that will work...Uflex being significantly less.

I just ordered today, Uflex parts S39 & A75 from boatfix.com, for about $80 shipped.

i think these are what you need, or at least the Clevis kit, if you have clamp block.
