I've tried all the sources in this sections' Sticky, and everything I could Google but I can't find my serial number in any range listed. I have a 5M sn 661 034994. The place this motor was originally bought from, and any service history, went bye bye last year.
Seller told me it's an '80, manual has a '79 revision date, 1 dealer tells me it's a '76 & another claims '78. Help!

Re: Need YOM on Mariner 5M

My book of serial numbers (genuine Merc book) lists it as 1976-1980.. The reason for the range is covered by the following statement, made by Mercury about the earlier Yam-Mariners....
"Mariner engines produced from 1974 thru 1987 did not carry a model year designation. Mariner dealers were directed to sell Mariner engines by feature rather than by model year. Engines produced in one year and sold the next year were considered current engines of the year sold. This applies to all 1987 and prior models and serial numbers listed in this report regardless of where the engine was produced."

HTH,

Chris..........

It was built in 1980 the starting serial number for 5M was 661-027316 but could have been sold as a current model any year after that. It's the Japanese way not to carry over engines and now the U.S. manufacturers have adopted that idea, nice HUH!
